An antenna from the old T.V. may work on some frequencies (UFH) and may not on other frequencies. An Amplifier is a double edged sword, generally used with transmitting devices to amplify the signal out put, although, if there is noise the amplifier will increase the noise.

I have heard of these being used for this purpose with some success but I have not tried it myself. I have a 12 volt one in the caravan and I have often thought of trying it. I will just have to make up a lead first.
If you do try it let us know how you go on.

I have just found a 240v tv amplifier in the loft and I have connected it to my scanner just before the receiver and I can confirm that it is quite effective. It actually clears up hissing on many stations. Mine is a variable and I can watch the signal strength go up whilst the hissing decreases. It appears to be working affectively on 2M & 70cm Bands. I have not tried lower frequencies yet and I dont have anything higher to try.
The funny thing is I appear to be receiving some weak frequencies which I have never received before. It will be interesting to put it in the loft at the base of the antenna and before the downlead. I will try that in the next few days.

would a tv antenna amp work with a scanner antenna

To answer your question, YES. Being a former cable man I have one of the cable amps we used to hook up for long RG-6 and RG-11 runs. These aren't available at stores, but I'm sure the R.S. amp will work just fine.
Mine is a 15db amp and it works great for scanning.
