I saw a very new/shiny looking AMR unit in downtown Jackson today with a radome, approximately 12-15 inches in diameter, and maybe 5 inches high (estimates guessed from a brief glance 30 feet away).

Does AMR have plans to ditch their high band :(.

Ascending soapbox: 9/11 seems to have done more to destroy
interoperatbility than any terrorist could have hoped. Nothing's more interoperable than a regular fm vhf repeater.

Yes AMR is in the process of converting some, if not all thier units to SATComms... with the high band for ER and interop with counties.. and the 800 for interops.... Primary comms will be linked into the sat net.. Also fully advanced CAD, VTS/VLS through GPS.

If I'm not mistaken, the MS Dept of Helath got a grant to have SAT radios installed in ambuilances. The three or four county ambulances in Desoto County have them also.

MDH has been looking into trying a satcom link with ALL EMS in the state.. but being so expensive when dealing with some of the agencies.... You know how that is. The only two using satcoms almost exclusively in MS.. AMR, and some places- Emergystat. Though 99 % of ER/MED coms are still conventional/trunked. MDH wanted to do a SatCom link to all ER's too.... But that is not in the works budget wise. Only a select few are online vias sat linkage to MDH... UMC, FGH, and I believe four others are.
