AMTRAK CW-9 "Corvette" of the railroad world.

CSX CW-9 "Humvee" of the railroad world.

They both incorporate the Clean-Cab Concept AAR bandplan locomotive tranceivers covering 160.215 MHz to 161.565 MHz

Motorola is out of the clean cab game, so JEM and a couple others will be the suppliers from now on. The JEM has Kenwood/Icom guts now, which will go to NXDN if/when the whole digital thing happens.

I like the "pepsi can" Amtrak went with when these were ordered. Kinda odd looking since they went with a freight looking, non-cowl design.

AMTRAK vs. CSX

Dave, that is actually not a CW-9 but an Amtrak GE P42BH prime mover assigned to Amtraks California service corridor, hence the 501 number, just admire the raw beauty of such a beast. AHHH, I love the sound of throbbing engines at LA Union Station in the morning.

PS: Icom1020, Don't you know that AMTRAK is the governments golden haired Casey Jones? They get whatever they want, needed, necessay or not, just look at their past failed toys: Aerotrain, Turbotrain (Now refurbished & relegated to the Empire Service corridor) First generation Metroliner, the E60 which was supposed to be a new & improved replacement to the GG-1, still a failure & still loping along the NEC like a crippled whale on wheels, X2000 & the ICE train, even Acela which barely passed their pre-revenue service trial run shakedowns. The AMTRAK crews actually call the P42BH the "pepsi can", like the AMTRAK NEC crews call the AEM7 the "toaster" & the P42DC Genesis, "Barney" now do you know why the CSX crews call that blue & yellow monster the "Flying nun"? Later guys.

Amtrak vs. CSX?

UP wins ;)

CSX Power is always junk... Crappy Seats, rattletraps, mirrors are always busted, toilets are junk... Buy hey! they have that button on the automatic brake handle that will bail off the independents for ya! Your spine may not ever be the same again, but at least you didnt have to hold the lever over to bail off! Never had the misfortune of ever being in an amtrak motor. Amtrak will NEVER be on point in this territory. UP will always be on the point. Amtrak just doesnt have the required technology.

I did see an amtrak train one day... It was sitting in Montour, IA waiting for me to get through a single track MOW project. There were three trains behind me and Amtrak had already been there 3 hours. It was taking about an hour per train to get cabs cut back in and operational. They were getting stiffed pretty hard that day.

FLRAILMAN, I'm sure you like riding trains...but it does get old after staring at the same red signal for 14 hours straight.

AMTRAK vs CSX & UP Wins!!!

I've seen your stuff when I visited my sister in Simi Valley, Quite impressive, you guys are big on pride & appearance. That massive barge on wheels, the DDA-40X was absolutely unreal to see in person when it was in revenue service. Amtraks problem is that they lord over any trackage rights railroad on the NEC, so when the ant ventures from the mound, the other host roads step on them, you know, tit for tat. 14 hours at a redball, nap-time. Take care.

Oh that's nothing! I followed him out to the employee parking lot after his shift and saw him getting into this car! I asked him why he didn't have ham vanity plates and he said that he didn't want to draw too much attention to his car!

UH UHH Scott, let's see all of your rides, including the vette & the tractor/lawnmower thingy too. Your hiding your plate huh, surely not from us harmless RR gentlemen, must have that red light camera blocker screen over it.

OK, well here is Grandpa teaching our eldest grand daughter how to drive the might John Deere. Yes, that is a radio attached to the hood of the tractor. I took the radio out of the Jeep pictured above and replaced it with a "sound system" with a CD player so I had to do something with the old radio. I have since removed the radio from the tractor and now use an iPod.

And here is the other summer-time play toy!

And speaking of summer (which we won't see again for quite some time), our old BBQ is getting tired and worn out so I was thinking of getting one of these next summer!

(Can I hijack a thread or what!)

Scott, this thread was hijacked quite a few post ago, so you're good, I am going to presume that the barrel of this BBQ monstrosity is the bong hitter? I still can't believe that you actually garage the John Deere & leave the MANTOY out in the elements.

I have the distinct feeling that this thread is going to be yanked any second. Duck Scott, here comes the hook.

XXXXXXXXX
Looks like we dodged a bullet... so far! (Hey, at least my picture is somewhat railroad related this time - even if it is in HO scale from my own layout!) The 2526 tender is attached to a Baldwin 2-8-0 loco from my Santa Fe section. The bullet we dodged is a Federal 36gr copper-plated hollow point .22 LR cartridge just in case anyone is interested.

Do you have the dispatch & road frequencies for your train? When I started on PC we were issued 110gr leaded round nose cartridges for our super-powerful S&W model 10s, when the ivory tower felt that we needed to adjust our firepower to keep up with the rising menace to the rail system, they upgraded us to 128gr leaded wadcutter cartridges for our deadly S&W model 13s. It was rumored that some wildcats were pushing 158 grain silvertips later on down the road knowing nothing about barrel stress, but hell no revolver I ever had, exploded. Oh we were transmitting on 160.68 MHz for the Atlantic Region, 161.22 MHz for the Metropolitan Region & 160.56 MHz for the Northeast Region back then. All aboard the night train..hic.

I am pretty sure the Class 789 locomotives of that era did not have any radios onboard!

As far as security on my railroad, my only 38 Special/.357 Magnum is a Ruger 50th Anniversary Blackhawk. My favorite target load for that is 138gr FMJ (aka WWB from Wal-Mart!), but I recently found a couple of places that have Prvi Partizan 158gr LRN. This stuff is from Serbia and is almost as cheap as the WWB's even when you add the shipping cost.

Ammo shortage, what ammo shortage???

Earth to Scott, what frequency did your Santa Fe security force use to communicate with each other? Look around at evolution of this thread & think hard, okay?

Actually my security team got their FCC license revoked because they continually talked about non-railroad issues on frequencies that were supposed to be for railroad purposes only. They had received a few infractions, but obviously they did not pay attention to them and eventually the FCC had no other choice but to take away their privileges. Wal-Mart has some bubble-pack FRS radios on sale that we are looking at until we can get this nasty issue with the FCC straightened out!
