I spent about 21 days stalking several saved searches and watch lists on eBay and I was looking for the GRE flavor, the Whistler flavor, and the RadioShack flavor.

Ultimately the best value by about USD$100 was a RadioShack 668 probably new but had been opened. Total price at the end of the auction was USD$285.00 + $10 shipping and handling. Priority mail took about four days to get to me.

I've seen used versions for as little as $185 but they get very competitive towards the final hour and usually clear at least what I paid for this one. I didn't scour private sale B/S/T listings or anything, just focused on gathering as much historical data as I could on eBay before narrowing in.

Hope this is interesting to someone.

First off good luck with your new PRO-668 scanner. $295 total delivered price is not bad when you consider Radio Shack is still selling the PRO-668 for the regular retail price of $500 and $375 when it goes on sale for 25% off.

Personally for about $50 more than what you paid for your PRO-668, I would have opted for the Whistler WS1088 handheld. You can currently purchase the Whistler WS1088 handheld brand-new from Walmart for $346.66 with FREE shipping included (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Whistler-WS1088-Digital-Handheld-Radio-Scanner/49115446).

IMHO there are some distinct advantages in buying the WS1088 over the PRO-668. First you get a full keyboard on the WS1088 that is not present on the PRO-668. Secondly you get the FREE DMR upgrade for the WS1088 from Whistler which may never become available for the PRO-668. Lastly, and probably most importantly, Whistler offers factory repair service for the WS1088 during the 1-year manufacturer's warranty period and also AFTER the 1-year warranty ends for a flat rate of $120. Radio Shack currently offers NO factory repair service for their PRO scanners.

I thought they were a GREAT deal in the winter of 2014 when the Radio Shack company-owned stores had tables full of them selling for $200 - while they were busy liquidating everything. I would venture to guess that some of them selling for $285 now were purchased off those same tables in 2014. Other than the AntennaCraft ST-2 antenna, what else could you buy in this hobby that actually increases in value over time?

FYI if you need/want a case for that brand-new PRO-668 there are a couple of options available.

1. Nylon case from Scanner Master for $12.95 (plus shipping): PSR800/PRO18/WS1080 - GRE Nylon Case/Cut Out Back | Scanner Master

2. Rubber surround case from Whistler for $29.95 (plus shipping): https://whistlergroup.com/collectio...oducts/scanner-case-for-trx-1-and-ws1080-1088

In a vacuum I would have gone that way myself except for the following:

- I have a Pro97 and my priority was discriminator output and p25, DMR not used much in my part of the country yet. TYT firmware hacks for DMR scanning seem like a likely possibility since if I do DMR the cheap HT I am likely to buy can also scan it.
- I am getting my ticket soon and will be buying a few other radios soon and would rather put that $50 towards a new HT or SDR.

My next stalking project is a Yaesu VX-8D/R.

Wish I had known you were looking, I've got a Pro-668 I'm about to list someplace (eBay, here in the classifieds, etc, haven't decided yet) for $240-ish more than likely with some rechargeable batteries included. Ah well, timing is everything as the saying goes. :D

too Much for PRO-668

I agree completely I would not buy the PRO-668 you can buy the WS1080 from Ham Radio Outlet for 369.00. Paying 375.00 dollars for a PRO-668 is to much for a product that Radio Shack does not support or get the updates is not worth it.

But in reality you can buy a brand new PRO-668 on Ebay for around $200.00
