Angel Thunder 2013 - Great MilAir monitioring!

Last year this was some really great MilAir monitoring.

This year it is being called the "largest rescue exercise in the world"

Last year I listened to a very intense night time exercise that sounded so realistic that it was amazing. I will just type out some of the article from the MARCH 8 2013 issue of the DESERT LIGHTNING , the newspaper from Davis-Monthan AFB here in Tucson.

Last year I listened to a downed pilot scenario that involved an E-3 AWAC's , MH-60 PaveHawks, KC-135 tankers, F-16's and A-10's and other a/c types.. The radio traffic was so realistic sounding that I really got caught up in it all.

Angel Thunder 2013 will take place APRIL 7 - 20 at Davis-Monthan AFB

Angel Thunder is the world's largest personnel recovery exercise, integrating sister services and numerous state,national, multinational and inter agency assets dedicated to saving lives in incredible circumstances.

The exercise simulates a comprehensive government response to isolated citizens, and echoes the Air Force rescue motto, " That others may live". Angel Thunder is the closest civilians can get to a personnel recovery mission without being part of a real-life rescue.

One portion of the exercise, RESOLUTE ANGEL, will test local, state, and federal organizations with a catastrophic, mass-casualty event reaching from the Grand Canyon to the New Mexico-Arizona border to Tucson, AZ. THIS SCENARIO WILL RUN APRIL 11-13.

Additionally, various events will take place APRIL 15 - 19, including high- altitude and urban-irregular warfare, contested operations and air-sea battles.

These scenarios will take place over 40,000 square miles of Arizona and New Mexico to simulate U.S. Embassy and federal employee recoveries.
The air-sea scenarios will span Arizona and the California coast.

As far as to what freq's to watch, sorry, I have a 15x that I have 99% MilAir. I have it programed with every freq that I found that was used by all squadrons at DM and TIA's Air Guard unit, Army Aviation and the air - air refueling tracks and ESPECIALLY the MOA's in Arizona.I would definitely program in all the MOA's freq's used in AZ as a start. At times during this exercise I did hear the AWAC's tell some of the airbourne to go "secure" (Have Quick) briefly.
I don't bother logging anything I just enjoy listening and hearing the activity. Tho this year I may attempt to try and record some audio if I have time to get around it. I know there are others that lurk about on this forum that probably can be more helpful on freq's. I have a radio tech friend on base that might be able to find what will be the active air2air used for the exercises. With what I had already programmed in my scanner I heard a lot of activity last year. I find MilAir far more interesting and enjoyable to monitor than say Tucson police.YMMV.

THANKS. I forgot to add this URL in my original post. The video's linked at this site are from last year and touch on this exercise. Last year there were a few foreign Air Force units involved and you would hear them in air 2 air conversations.

Was hearing a lot of interesting comm's from the Goldwater Range last year.
