I compiled an aa country map with police districts and beats, fire stations
and DPW yards listed. The small version is my avatar. the larger version

Bill, that's a fantastic piece of work you've done. The only thing I'm still trying to determine is exactly which roads separate the police districts. I want to transfer those lines to a big wall map. Can you provide those?

Excellent Effort! It's very much appreciated. Would you post some details on how you compiled the data and generated the map?

Also, I noticed one typo as I was glancing through. You have Station 20 (Lake Shore) labelled as 21, and 21 (Harmans) is correctly labelled.

Looks great from what I see. Other then a few corrections that were metioned above.

Is it me, or can I not get a bigger copy of this picture? If I could see it in a bit more detail I could get a better look at it. It looks like some of the station locations could be off a bit.

AA County map adjustments

Thanks for the comments, I made the map by taking a copy of the aaco police districts and beats from their 2002 annual report and overlaid it onto a DPW map of the country from the web. Then looked up the addresses for the fire stations on the aaco web page and checked them in mapquest. Transferred the coordinates to the new map by hand (yeah some are off a bit because I didn't want to cover up the police beats). I am using Adobe photoshop 7 (just learning to use it) and will make the change on station 20 and post it tonight. Will also make a larger copy as a 1meg bit map file ( aaco4.bmp) and post it tonight also. When you blow it up it does get fuzzy, but will try to find a better street map overlay to use.

I started this in conjuction with an effort to better track the 4040 radios that are used in the county. I have been running trunker since Jan and have quite a few of the FD radios idented to specific units. Still working on that.

very good. im impressed (dont take that the wrong way). not sure if anyone has noticed, but there is a dot labeld "new" for the fire dept. rumor has it that this will be station 22 or 25 (severn). they are anticipating and april 2005 opening, but from a couple of sources of mine, seems more like july 2005. supposed to be an all paid station.

Attached please find an updated copy of the map aaco5.jpg . The site http://www.aacoradio.org has an updated map as well with a smaller file size. The map physical size has been increased to 8x10.

Okay....That's blown up.

Just a couple observations. Remove the 4 from Station 5. It only denotes the battalion chief that is stationed there. Maybe you could think about adding Stations 43 (BWI), 45 (FGGM), and 46 (USNA), maybe another color to add to the key? Just my input.

Looks good though.

Some of the Police posts are "clickable" to see a detailed map of the post. It takes awhile to do each post so I have only done a few. The detail I am using comes from a 2002 AACO PD annual report and it is a little fuzzy at the street level. Also, some of the posts may have changed. If anyone has new detail I sure would appreciate it. let me know if you would like a post in your area detailed.


I am using MS Streets and Trips for the detail maps.

Does 5 Adam 1 include Maryland City?

I've been hearing 5 Baker 3 in Western District, but this isn't one of the
posts listed. Any idea?

Yes, the 5A1 post is the A.A. Co. side of Laurel and Maryland City. The post assignments that you see on the map are mandatory to fill with officers, a.k.a., minimum staffing. If there aren't enough officers then a supervisor will beg, borrow, or steal another officer from another district or announce, over the air, overtime available. The day shift and evening shift are allocated more officers and the post assignments, as per the map, are different for them than they are for the midnight officers. For example, during the day and evening shift the 5A1 and 5A2 cars work the Maryland City area while the 5A1 car is the only car working there during the midnight shift. If you're hearing a 5B3 car it's most likely during the first two shifts rather than the midnight shift.
If all post assignment were filled and there was a surplus of officers we would have "umbrella cars". These officers would cover two or three post assignments to help the post officers. These would usually use the callsign 514, 515, 516, 517, etc., and the callsign would be assigned by the supervisor.
I'm not sure if they've changed some things as far as post assignments go. That was the way it was done when I was there.
The supervisors used a non-alphanumeric call, i.e., 510, 511, 512, 520, 521, 522, 530, 531, 532, etc. 510 was Shift 1's Lt., 511 and 512 were the Sergeants. 540 was the midnight Lt., 541, 542, and 543 were the Sergeants. If you hear units identified as "Western xxx" then these are the district detectives, district narcotics officers, and any other specialized units assigned to the district. Western 500 is the district Captain.
Hope this info helps 'ya and it was in current use when I worked for the county.

I forgot to add that the map shown on this thread is different than the one we had in the district station. The maps we had in the district station did show the post allocations for the day, evening, and midnight shifts. The map for the midnight assignments was totally different than the ones for day and evening shift.

do officers ususally keep the same radio with them? I have heard units identify themselves with the number that represents the last four digits of the number on their radio, usually at Arundel Mills or after hours work.

Forgot to mention that the umbrella cars seem to use callsigns like 5R1 and 5R4 for "roaming" units.
