Here in denver the police chief is angry about all these feeds. He can encrypt any time he wants and so can the other departments. Then nobody will be able to listen. then what???????

The chief doesn't care that anyone with a scanner can hear his police department, but he's going to encrypt to keep the guy sitting in his basement in Alstop, New Hampshire can hear his PD? Seems like a not-very-smart person...

Anything that can be fed online can be heard locally with a scanner purchased at any of the 1,000's of RadioShacks and other suppliers throughout the US. There should be nothing to worry about by the agencies we feed.

I'm a retired LEO and there was more than one occassion where a scanner listener helped us to solve a crime. One that comes to mind involved the robbery of an elderly man. The suspect would not have been apprehended if the scanner listener (with a scanner in his car contrary to NY law, as some might say) was not listening and in the area he was in at that time. My department publicly commended him for his actions that day.

So what is he waiting for? Why hasn't he implemented it already if he's so angry?

Tell the chief the scanner listeners in your community might vote him out if he encrypts. Intimidation works both ways.

Folks,

Based on increased overall listener counts, we've made the decision to change the feed provider incentives to adjust for some significant growth we've seen just over the past two weeks.

As indicated in the original post announcing these incentives, we reserve the right to change these feed provider incentives at any time.

I've edited the original post to reflect the new thresholds, however here they are summarized:

1) If a feed breaks the threshold of 750 concurrent listeners on a feed for any given time, the feed provider will receive a $50 gift certificate to Scanner Master.

2) If a feed breaks the threshold of 1000 concurrent listeners on a feed for any given time, the feed provider will receive a $75 gift certificate to Scanner Master.

3) If a feed breaks the threshold of 1500 concurrent listeners on a feed for any given time, the feed provider will receive a $200 gift certificate to Scanner Master

4) If a feed breaks the threshold of 2000 concurrent listeners on a feed for any given time, the feed provider will receive a $300 gift certificate to Scanner Master

The good news is we've already paid out over $500 in incentives since the announcement was made... so the program is working nicely!

Again, remember that the purpose of this change is to account for significant growth of our listener community. We obviously can't maintain a incentive plan that would pay out to numerous providers every day :)

Thanks,

An idea. I hope it is OK to have such a crazy idea...
Maybe another prize???
IMHO getting 750 people for an hour is one thing and is certainly commendable.
Long term numbers are more important.
What about a cumulative prize?
Like most listeners per month?
Maybe come up with a way to generate a cumulative Listener Hours stat. Use that Statistic to generate a rating system to determine what feed is NO1 No2 and No3 over a Longer term. 1 month, 3 months 6 months a year.
It's long term numbers that really count compared to a news spike with a few hundred listeners. Feeds that are well maintained sound good and provide for many good listening opportunities are the ones that should be rewarded.(IMHO) These are the feeds that count.

I'm here a lot

With the threat of a tsunami, people may be curious to see what is happening there now.

Yes indeed, we have another big winner! Congrats to the feed provider. We are reaching out to him right now.

Most importantly, thank goodness that Hawaii escaped any problems from the predicted Tsunami. And even more importantly, let's hope that our friends in Chile are safe and OK. we have a very dedicated feed provider from Chile that went offline just as soon as the earthquake started. There are listed here:

Live Police, Fire, and EMS Scanners on RadioReference.com

Let's hope for they are safe and ok.

Warm regards,

Hawaii Feed

Aloha all...

I had no idea that this incentive program even existed until I received an EMail from RR saying my Big Island feed had topped out at 3003 listeners.

I read the various forum comments - and was interested in the ones from people in small towns saying it was unlikely they would ever be able to win.

My feed is a great example of how this is simply not true. Keaau, and even this island itself, is pretty small (even though we are the biggest hawaiian island), and it is certainly remote (2000 miles from land in all directions). Can't get much more remote than that.

Normally my scanner has 6 or 7 listeners, with the occasional peek to 20 or so.

I was listening to the feed myself, and happened to notice that it was up to 300 or so listeners. I was intrigued - at that point I modified my feed profile to include the 2-hour current event (which I'm sure helped boost it somewhat).

I was astonished to watch the statistics grow as the tsunami grew closer. The highest count I personally saw was 2996 listeners, before it started to drop (RR stats show 3003).

So even though we are a very small island with a very small population, the fact that a potential disaster was headed our way made for an audience of listeners.

Since we refer to this island as "Danger Island", you can expect more in the future - we have active volcanoes, daily earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, tsunami - every natural disaster in one spot.

But the same goes for any small town - ANY event can suddenly happen that puts YOU on the map.

Aloha nui loa! And thanks for listening!

I'm really glad we didn't have to hear any serious problems.
I occasionally listen in just to hear traffic from afar, right now I have a feed running from Italy.
Take care MrIcee, and again, glad everything turned out as well as it did. I'm sure this was a good learning experience for all , residents and officials alike.

I was listening to your feed from Ontario, Canada and watching video streams at the same time from your region.

I was saying to friends how in this day an age, we can watch an listen to such activities unfold live as they happen.

Thanks for providing the feed, and glad everything all worked out for you and your Island family.

I would like to see a Live Audio Feed record holder page added to the Wiki. I suspect it will need to be created and maintained by Lindsay, Kendrik or another admin with access to the data and feeds winning incentives.

This will be a neat historical log (with every previous record feed and reason) or at least a top listing (for the top 10, etc record holders) to maintain.

Ideally the page should capture the date/time (and maybe duration of incident if useful), feed name/feed content, max number of concurrent listeners reached, a brief description of the reason/incident that contributed to setting a record (and maybe even link to more details, preserve audio logs from that feed time for historical significance, graph of feed providers over incident time, links to media reports or other details), and the award level reached as well as feed provider information if they don't mind being mentioned.

Just thinking we need to start capturing and presenting this data in a structured fashion before we get too far in and don't have access to all the previous information or details.

Any other thoughts for the usefulness or interest of maintaining such a listing, and any other ideas for details that should be included?
