There are a lot of radios on DTRS that are 700/800 (dual band). All of the currently sold Moto. radios that are in the 800 band are also 700 capable.
Right now they are only letting certain talk groups use the 700 sites. If a radio decides that a 700 site is the strongest, it will try to affiliate. It can be denied though, and then it will move on to the next site.
You are right, for a 700 (only) site to broadcast a certain talk group at least one 700 capable radio is affiliated on that site.
To complicate matters they also have 700/800 sites. Those sites have 800 control channels and some 700 voice channels. On those, only specific talk groups use the 700 channels (ones where all the radios are 700 capable).

I've been too busy to keep up with the latest stuff, so I'm wondering if you can actually monitor these 700 Mhz talkgroups with the 396? Since I'm here, two more questions: I pulled up behind a Denver police motorcycle and noticed an odd antenna on it. There was the obvious 800 Mhz antenna, and the other one, I think it was about 24" long. What the heck is it for? Also, what is a "Rake and Brake"? I heard a DPD officer say she had one in her car.

To answer one of your Questions Jerry- Yes the 396 will follow the 700MHz CC's. The Pro-96/2096 will monitor them in conventional mode (no TG's), however you can follow And log the dual band sites (with TG's) with a pro-96/2096 connected to "Pro-96com".

Yeah, definitley State Capital. Nice and strong compared to the Auraria site. Oddly, of the week or so of logging, I have not seen nearly as many 9B affiliations as I would expect. More on the Auraria site, in fact.

Those two sites are pretty darn close. I wonder if the Capitol antennas are mounted very high and the users are in the null underneath the site. That would be pretty funny. Maybe they should look into some null fill antennas.
