FRISCO - Authorities say a worker from the Colorado Department of Transportation was hit by a car on Interstate 70 early Sunday morning by a woman who had fallen asleep at the wheel.

The Colorado State Patrol says the incident occurred at 6:50 a.m. at mile marker 199.5 in the westbound lanes while the CDOT worker was repairing the cable barrier.

Troopers say the CDOT worker saw a 1996 Honda Accord run off the left side of the road and bear down on him. The worker tried to leap over the cable barrier, out of the path of the oncoming car, but the car hit one of his legs.

The worker, whose identity was not released, was taken to Summit Medical Center in Frisco, according to state patrol. His condition was not immediately known.

Troopers say the woman driving the Honda was not injured. Her identity was withheld pending investigation.

State patrol says the woman has been charged with careless driving causing bodily injury.
