With the two earthquakes in the last several months, should we be concerned. I saw a scientist, UALR Seismologist Haydar Al-Shukri, PhD, on KTHV Channel 11 tonight, and he said that, "there is more activity along this New Madrid Fault than they first expected. Also that the stress has been accumulating at a faster pace at least very recently If it continues, Dr. Al-Shukri warns Arkansans could see more frequent and possibly deadly tremors in the next 15 years". He said, "If the trend is going to continue, that means we anticipate to see possibly larger magnitude along this New Madrid seismic zone."

Some of the biggest earthquakes in US history happened on this fault. Check out this link I found just by doing a google search. http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/prepare/factsheets/NewMadrid/

Also from 1975 to 1995 map showing the New Madrid Fault activity:

Other info available at this site: http://quake.ualr.edu/public/nmfz.htm

I think we have a real good reason to be concerned, although there isn't a thing we can do to prevent a major earthquake. I think if a magnitude 8 earthquake struck in the area of NW AR, E. Tenn, SE MO would be devistated. Especially cities like Memphis and other largely polulated areas. Lets just pray nothing like that happens. What is your opinion on the issue?

If you live in a city, you might need to be concerned.

Otherwise, places like here in Alaska we get 4.x earthquakes almost daily without incident.

Earthquakes in AR

I think it would be wise to be concerned about it.
You only have one chance to be prepared...once a big one hits, it's too late.
Make a plan with your family of a meeting place if comms go down,
know how to stay safe during an earthquake (stand under a door, away from windows, check for gas leaks/have tool on hand for shutting off gas
line. Theres plenty of info on line about earthquake safety & preparedness--check it out.
It seems earthquakes are a reality of life in your part of the U.S.--
and the New Madrid fault is one mean dog when it really lets loose.
