CONTACT #1: Deputy Cocha Heyden, Public Information Officer
RELEASE DATE: 04/20/07 RELEASE TIME: 9:20 am CASE NUMBER:

WHAT: Douglas County Sheriff Responds to Reports of Loud Noise Behind Ponderosa High School

NARRATIVE: DOUGLAS COUNTY: The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to Ponderosa High School 7007 E Bayou Gulch Road Parker, CO. on unconfirmed reports of an explosion behind the school.

At 8:58 am Douglas County Deputies and Bomb Team responded to Ponderosa High School on the report that an explosion was heard going off behind the school. When school security and deputies checked the noise out they did find that some sort of device had gone off. At this time it has not been determined what that device was.
Douglas County deputies did locate a suspect and upon search of this person they did locate another device. This device has been secured by the Bomb Team. In the middle of all this the fire alarm was activated at the school. School officials decided to evacuate the students away from the school.
The Bomb Team will be searching the school for any other devices.
There have been no reports of damage to school or injuries.
School Officials have asked that if parents are coming to school to please go to the parking lot of the LDS church across from the school.

They would prefer at this time that no one respond to the school area until it is deemed safe.

More information to be released as it is available.

DOUGLAS COUNTY - Ponderosa High School was evacuated Friday morning after a security guard heard a loud noise behind the school.

Douglas County Sheriff's Deputy Cocha Heyden said security staff at Ponderosa High School heard a loud noise shortly before 9 a.m. A fire alarm sounded and they began evacuating the building.

The Douglas County Bomb Team responded to investigate the school and surrounding area.

Investigators say a junior boy was found outside the school carrying a small, homemade explosive device about as powerful as a firecracker.

The Sheriff's department took the boy's car after finding more bomb-making material in his backpack.

They think he was planning on putting devices all around the school to scare students on the eighth anniversary of the Columbine shootings.

The Douglas County School District said all of the students were evacuated safely and no injuries were reported.

LOL....I work for a High School in S Colorado Springs and everyone in this school district has defiantly been on edge in light of the recent threats. My school gets locked down at 3:30 no questions. Oh, and further more the zero tolerance policy really helps to try to get an upper hand on gang activity and all round nonsense. Over a hundred kids have been expelled this year alone.
