The Maxrad BMAX Scan 1000, works exceptionally well for me, can be used for body mount, l-mount, lip mount...

Radio Shack has a nice all-band mag. mt. scanner antenna that you can plop down on your roof, or trunk lid if you have a car..

No experience with it myself, but I've heard some good things about it. Price is decent also, around 30 bucks..

What is the performance like on VHF LO (30-50 mHz). It's not spec'd for that coverage, but I'm sure you get some reception? Or is it really atrocious in that band?

Sorry, I should have clarified that I was asking about the Maxrad BMAX 1000 on 30-50 mHz. The Maxrad is only spec'd to cover down to 150 mHz.

The Radio Shack antenna you cited does have a lowest freq of 30 mHz as part of its spec.

If you seldom listen to 30-50 mHz, it proabably doesn't matter that the Maxrad is not spec'd down there. However, where I am 30-50 is a significant band. On top of that, there is a lot in that range that I'd hate to compromise. When I'm traveling, I often use the scanner to monitor 27 mHz for road conditions, etc. I was hoping someone could comment on whether the Maxrad is just "OK" on VHF LO, or actually is usable.
