Hi

I've just got an Icom IC-R20 and I'm interested in listing to shortwaves frequency (1.5 to 50 MHz), what kind of antenna do you recommend ??

I've already have a Diamond Discone, but its frequency range is 25-1300.

If possible I want a portable or base antenna. I'm not sure if I have the right to install a long wire antenna in the backyard.

thanks

If you live on the East Coast, you will quickly find that a wire more than 20 or 30 foot is going to badly overload the radio. As an alternative, some have used the Performance HF antenna (discussed briefly in a R20 thread in our HF forum, which see...), and others have used the Miracle antenna - both of which are linked in our HF antennas wiki. Antennas such as these tend to perform somewhat better as they add a bit of front end selectivity; they are, however, fairly pricey.

Radios such as the R20 suffer because of design shortcomings due to costs of manufacture. They just aren't designed to handle big antennas. In fact, your discone may work reasonably, but it may too cause overloading. As they say in the business, once you've heard it, you'll know immediately

antenna for Icom IC-R20

thanks ka3jjz for the infos.

I've check the performance hf web site and the antenna look great but I can't buy one, they didn't ship in Canada. Do you know other store who sell the performance HF antenna?

I'm in Quebec, Canada, so you think I will overload my radio with long wire antenna?

thanks

Yes, it's quite possible overloading will be an issue.

I don't know who else might be selling that Performance antenna, sorry 73 Mike
