Antenna GURU Needed

I have a Old Big Stick. The bottom 239 connector was removed and I connected a new one. It seems to receive OK but has a super high SWR, all the way up on the scale. I changed the top whip and tested again but still NG. What is in the bottom section that I can't see that can cause the problem. All I see in the bottom section is the coax wire coming out. Anyway to do some testing on this. Its now turned into a quest. I have a second one but it works fine. Ron

Sounds like the SO-239 was salvaged and the rest sold or thrown away. Considering how they were put together, save your new connector and the top portion and throw the thing away.

Do ypurself a BIG favor, never mind this old, used, broken crap you keep playing around with. Antennas in time degrade,break, and are unsalvageable.. Go out, SPEND the money and get a new antenna it will last you many years and will be cheaper in the long run.

Sounds more like a quest than really wanting to replace the antenna. Since anything can be used as a RX antenna, even a coat hanger, I wouldn't put much faith in that it is receiving OK. It's possible that the coax has corroded internally, since water likes to wick up coax braid, or the top connection is corroded. I don't know how far you want to take it apart, but I would look in those directions. Use an OHM meter to check for continuity, as any high resistance is going to give you a high SWR.
