To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Been out of the CB deal for many years. I am looking for a simple antenna setup to see if I want to get back in it or not. In the past I used an antron99 well above the roof line but lookin for something more simple right now. Is there a set up I can do with a grounding rod, mirror mount attached with a mobile antenna or whip screwed on? I would have to run the coax through the window to begin with...

I know I can use a magnet mount on the truck with a mobile antenna and coax run through the window but looking for something I can set up outside of the window without using a vehicle...

I have tons of equiptment but for the life of me I cant think of an antenna setup to get by on and no luck online.Everything I can find is for permanent stuff.Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Hope this made sense!

How about a RadioShack mirror mount mount with a 3/8 inch thread mount and get the RadioShack 102 inch CB antenna whip and screw that into the mount and mount it on a small pole outside? If the coax run is less then 30 feet long you could use RG-8X coax.

Thanks for the reply...Ive got a mirror mount and a steel whip already. What I did try was putting a 6ft. galvanized ground rod about 3 ft into the ground and mounted the morror mount onto that with the whip but my SWR's were off the chart so I dont even know if that would have worked doing a qiuck setup like that anyways..Any ideas?

Like I said I ran an antron99 for years, many years ago, and it was awesome...Is there a different brand that is just as good for less money than the Antron nowadays incase I decide to go with something permanent?

Last night I did put a magnet mount on the truck with the 102 whip on it and ran the coax through a cracked window and got about 1.2 SWR reading but for some reason im not getting out.Cant get anyone to really answer me back and I live in a large city with tons of trucks...

Thanks for any further help!

Well I think your bad SWR for the mount on the ground rod is caused by the fact it is on a ground rod and only 6ft off the ground.

For a base antenna am not sure because I don't know of any CB base antennas

How large of a city do you live in? With tall buildings? If so it might be a signal problem or maybe just that no one is answering back.

What kind of CB radio are you using?

Cut 3 or 4 pieces of wire about 110 inches long, loosen the clamp on the ground rod, Strip the ends of the wires and put them between the clamp and the rod, tighten the clamp, spread the wires out evenly around the rod, recheck the swr. The ground rod is too short to make an effective ground plane. the wires will do that.

Good advise but you want to get the antenna up in the air for two reasons. One is CB is somewhat line of sight and getting the antenna up will clear houses and stuff in the way.

Second is antennas on the ground experience additional ground loss and the efficiency goes down. Moving the antenna up to ideally multiples of 1/2 wavelength (about 18ft) will reduce the ground loss and also help bring the radiation pattern more toward the horizon instead of being pushed upward where your signal is wasted.

Dust/Weather Cover/Cap

Looking for some sort of a cover or cap to put on a hexagon (6 point) antenna stud when the antenna is removed to keep the elements out..Has anyone ever seen something for this purpose? Where to obtain some from?

Thanks!
