I just received a new Radio Shack PRO-164 (RS # 20-164) scanner for Christmas for listening to 160 to 162 MHz railroad frequencies. I read somewhere, but can't find it again, the best length for an external antenna at those frequencies. Can someone please give me a link or reference for best antenna lengths at various frequencies. I also received a telescoping 6.25" to 26.25" (RS# 20-006) antenna and hope that this will work. Thanks in advance for any help. Capt. Brigg

This is what I saw here on RR, well at least I think it was here!
Antenna Length Calculation Good Luck! :)

Bob 61, your link returned an "Object not found" response, but thanks for the response. I did find a formula to compute antenna lengths: 2834 / Freq in MHz: so, 2834/161 MHz= 17.6" antenna length. I hope this formula is correct. Capt. Brigg

For a quarter wave antenna around 162MHz the length for the antenna should be about 17 inches.

The length in feet of a quarter wave antenna is 234 divided by the frequency that you intend to receive.

L = 234 / 162 = 1.444 feet. Now multiply by 12 to get inches.

L (in) = 1.444 * 12 = 17.333 inches.
