Does anyone know where the transmit antenna is located for the WXJ-87 NOAA weather radio 162.550 in Madison? If this is in the database I'm not seeing it... The most specifics I'm finding on the NWS site are "Madison" and "1000 watts".

Thanks!

NOAA Weather Radio Stations are administered by IRAC ( Interdepartmental Radio Advisory Committee ), not the FCC. Their Federal registry of radio data has been closed to the general public since the early 1980's, so getting precise locations, coordinates and info in general, may be a challenge regarding any Federal systems. Good luck.

It's at a high profile site, which is why that 1000 watts it is pushing help it to be heard all over the southern part of the state.

It's not my position to say which site, and for all practical purposes it doesn't really matter. I don't say to be a d*ck, but since it covers everywhere anyway the location isn't important.

Sounds good. I could probably take a few guesses... I'm assuming it's 1000w ERP?

The reason I asked is there are certain areas on the West side of Madison where the NOAA broadcast will occasionally overload my Pro-94 and I'll hear it on top of a range of VHF frequencies.

I'll give you a hint Luke its one of the two tallest towers on the west side of Madison, so now you have a 50/50 chance.

Try living on the west side for five years with this thing almost in your back yard...filters are your friends. :)

For a picture and specs on these lovely intermod generators go here...

BTW that's 1kW TPO; before any line loss or antenna gain.

Too bad the NWS office there doesn't go into detail like the Lincoln,IL office does. That one tells you exactly what tower it is on (if it is a well-known tower).

WXJ-71 transmits at 162.475 MHz from the WTVP-TV tower in East Peoria. Cities in the coverage area include Peoria, Galesburg, Lacon, Mason City, and Canton.

Or something generic, but close

KZZ-65 transmits at 162.525 MHz from a tower on the far west side of Bloomington. Cities in the coverage area include Bloomington/Normal, Mackinaw, and Eureka.

The WTVP tower one booms in about 15mi SE of Lincoln (appx 45 miles away). They must of found a pretty decent chunk of bluff and threw it on there. :p

"Other tenants on this tower are WIBA-FM (101.5), WERN-FM (88.7), NOAA Weather radio WXJ-87, WKOW TV & DTV, City of Madison & Dane County two-way radio systems, Sky Cable, UW-Extension Instructional Television Fixed Service (ITFS), and a variety of other radio and cellular/paging systems."

Weather transmitters

For what its worth, outside of Madison some of the relays are located on state-owned towers, often the ones used for Public TV and radio.

they are on the "Madison community tower" which is on the beltline right where it turns at mineral point rd it is really tall and hard to miss.
