antenna mast mounting question

Soon, I'll be mounting an antenna mast on top of my house roof. I have nearly everything. cept maybe like... an antenna. (grumble...durnlocalradioshop...grumble).

i have guy wire and all it's nesscary equipment that i'm going to use and I bought a radio shack roof mount kit (15-889) what i'd like to know is if i need to get a tripod for the mast? it's a 10' mast. the mast that my tv ant. is on is arranged this way and it's been standing there for 20+ years.

Back up a little. Why on the roof? What kind of antenna.? What kind of house? I've been putting up ant's for 50 years. [I'm 65] Learned a lot. There is not usually any good reason to mount a mast or tripod on a roof. Will cause a water leak in most cases. Post more info. There has to be a better way. Larry

it's a wood-frame house, is that what you mean? i want it on the roof cause i live in the city; trees, other houses around mine. it's a diamond discone, D-130J.

as for water leaks, i've considered that possibility. i plan to do my best to prevent leaks from taking place.

You should have talked to a roofer 50 years ago. Properly installed antennas don't cause any more leaks than properly installed shingles.

That being said, the 15-889 mount is perfectly adequate for small antennas. And to prevent leaks, cover every intrusion into the roof with roofing cement. (All bolts, including the eye bolts for the guy wires, should go into rafters, not just into the plywood. Use long lag bolts for the mount itelf, and a large wrench or ratchet to drive them in. Dip them into roofing cement before driving them in.)
