Purchased WS-1040 for my 13yr old. We're both new & I just want to get him started w/ a few channels before he has a meltdown ! Registered on radioreference.com.

Where are you located? State/County? Knowing your general location, people here can help you.

As far as programming goes, you can use ARC500, Win500, or PSREdit to program your young un's scanner, all have 30 day free trials so you can compare them before buying. But without the software, the RR Premium Membership won't really help you at all. You can program the scanner manually, but if you want to listen to a trunked system, doing it that way can get pretty tedious.
