Incredible!

So, do you actually ever hear anything on the milsats other than pirates and encrypted comms? I've pretty much given it up because that's all I ever get.

Steve K8PBX,

I love your style.... I just got finished checking out your webpage and love how you have tower setup and the coax bulkhead etc. I can see you really must be into PBX's lol. Damn I never saw a residence with so many 66 blocks. hahahha. Good job... A little envious here.

Aah, that’s nuthin. There’s a lot more interesting antennas waiting to go up but time and space are a problem. The existing stuff is mostly fed with ½” Andrew Heliax and it drops into a cable tray all the way to the radio area, see the attached pic. Lots of grounding where it finally terminates but I still unplug EVERYTHING when lightning is nearby. I don't have a website or any 66 blocks here, must be someone else’s site.

It’s rare when I get time to scan the UHF mil sats lately but there is an occasional in the clear test or a bo-boo when someone doesn’t know they are encrypted. The coolest way to monitor UHF mil sats is with my PRO-43 and the smallest antenna in the Satcom pic bunch. It folds up a little bigger than 4 packs of cigarettes but brings in plenty of signal when deployed.

My wife would kill me with a tower like that.

USAF FS/FTA Antenna

Here's the last antenna job I was involved in:

Installing a new beacon antenna on a USAF GPN-20 radar reflector.

The GPN-20 is a terminal type air traffic control radar. The beacon antenna is used with the secondary radar system (IFF/SIF).

Here is one of my recent projects. Although not for ham/scanner use, the shelter would make a most excellent ham shack. It weighs almost 70,000lbs EMPTY!

I have one of those at home and at the office. Although some may disagree, I've found them to be about the best BASE scanner antenna for the freqs we use in our little area of the world. It even does great on the Ohio MARCS trunked system. Too bad they are getting harder and harder to find. My first one was a Channel Master. A couple more tower site work pics too with emphasis on grounding...Steve
Thats really cool Steve, Sort of reminds me of when we put up the
tower on the EBR system back in "89

My dad use to install those when he wasn't an instructor in the USAF.
Is he an instructor at Keesler AFB?

I spent a year of my life there during the 80's learning radar maintenance.

I love your antenna system! I've gotta get a setup like yours. Where did you get the portable satcom antennas? Better yet, where can I buy one??

Awesome

The largest satcom antenna in the back and the smallest one to the right came from the Dayton Hamfest. One of my Dayton travel buddies saw the big one on display and said “if you buy that ugly thing you win the prize this year”, so I did. The long one in the front was a prototype from a local company that was given to me and the rest came from Ebay. Prices paid on Ebay ranged from $104 to $160. You need to do some creative searching to find the ones that people don’t advertise properly or the price will be about triple. You can also try Murphys Surplus for satcom antennas. http://www.murphyjunk.bizland.com/index.html
