Hey folks, hopefully this is a easy question but does anyone know what the little antennas on the NHP vehicals are? their about 3 or so inches high, stright no curls like on a 800Mhz antenna.

NHP 800 MHz Antennas
All of the Divisions within DPS (NHP, NPP, NDI, Fire Marshal, Capitol Police, Emergency Management) most likely use the same antenna for 800 MHz and it is exactly as you described it. The State is known to be cheap and it seems to be using a very simple unity gain antenna for 800 MHz, about the cheapest that can be found. No surprise. You will find the same antenna in Southern Nevada on vehicles used by DPS.

Yes they are cheaper than a gain type antenna but, a high gain antenna may not be the best solution when the repeater sites are mounted on mountain tops. A gain antenna works by lowering the radiation angle toward the horizen. If you are in a valley near the base of the mountain, with a gain antenna that has little high angle radiation, you may not be heard by the system.

Low gain antennas also minimize the effects of multipath.
