First off im studying to take my technician class license and new to all this.Im going to start out cheap at first nothing fancy yet until I get experience. My question is im going to purchase a beofeng handheld radio and a slim jim 2m 70 cm antenna just to get started,i live in a mobile home and was thinking of attaching pvc to my deck and have it sticking up about 3 ft over my roof. The pvc will look like the letter F with the antenna mounted between the two 90 degree sections if you can picture that,i was wondering if it being about 3 ft above the roof and about 3 ft from the side of my mobile home will the metal from mobile home interfere with the antenna function? Also i live in a valley and the mountains on each side are about 1200 ft high will that affect my distance on transmitting and receiving? Thanks and sorry for such a long post.

The SlimJim and other J pole variants have a problem with anything mounted next to it.

Only the bottom section of the pvc below the actual antenna can be used to attach it to a mast.

The antenna should mounted clear of anything within 39" of it.

The terrain around you will hamper or block you signal from getting out and signals from getting in. The pvc next to the antenna, since its non conductive material, should not hurt. Good luck on your exam. Now

Instead of putting it 3' away, is it possible to mount it right on the side of the trailer, just above the roofline? The top of the trailer should give you good reflection for the signal.

You might have better luck with a vehicle type, duel band antenna, mounted on a painted steel circle placed on top of the home. If you can get the antenna you have planned to use up higher, it would help.
If you have any tree's right next to your home, go to N9TAX Web Station!
This guy makes a duel band antenna from 450 ohm twin lead that works excellent (about $27.00), especially when you have mountains around you. It's about 3' long, could be painted to match the sky, a tree or anything else.
I used this antenna with a second radio when I was running a very large bike race and it worked as well as my vertical duel band antenna. Do feed it with LMR 400 if possible, smaller cable has a lot of loss on UHF. If you must use smaller cable, use LMR 240. It's has the least amount of loss of any thin cable and keep the run as short as possible.

Good Luck and welcome to the world of radio, John
