If that's where it works - run with it! The biggest improvement is probably just not having the hood blocking part of the antenna pattern like it was on the fender. Enjoy!

Glad I found this forum. I have a question for ya'll to ponder. I work at Baptist with AirCare/Brenner critical care transport. Our office is inside the hospital and we use Motorola APX 6000 handhelds while in the office. Our dispatch is out of Nebraska. (Yep, thats what I said) We talk on Viper. Our reception inside the office is HORRIBLE and that's the polite description. MY idea is to dedicate a handheld to the office, remove the factory antenna, use an adaptor to connect coax to the radio from a mag mount 800 antenna. Go up thru the drop ceiling and down on the other side of the door/office to increase reception. The hospital HAS allotted money for a repeator, The ED has one.....not doing us much good 6 floors up. Until then, I / we need to do something to better our reception. Any ideas, thoughts, different / better ideas....ARE greatly welcomed. PLEASE help.

The right thing to do is likely to be expensive - not a cheap solution. Does your organization have access to any rooftop - perhaps a rooftop helipad? There are devices called "remote base" that would install with antenna on / near the rooftop and be connected via wire (not coax) to a control console in your office many floors down. Running coax at 800 mHz any great distance is going to severely attenuate your signal... that's why remote-controlled base stations are used. Another possibility: How far are you from being able to put an antenna outside the building via a wall penetration, window casing, etc? If close enough, then coax might be OK from an HT in the office to the outdoor antenna. Another possibility (least desirable): Do you have a known "hotspot" near the office where one of your HTs works perfectly? Can you put an antenna in / near that hotspot and run a short length of coax back to an HT in the office?
