I am planning on buying either a RS Pro-2096 or a Bearcat BC796D and will be setting up an outside antenna. Which is the best antenna to use for these scanners?

There are so many variables to consider, it would be impossible to answer this question without more information. To start with, what is your location? What do you intend to monitor? How far are you from the signals you intend to monitor? What is you're environment? Etc, etc...
Thanks Bill. I am near Charlottesville Va at about 500 ft. elevation with the signals being 18 miles away. Currently we use older analog systems in our area but will be switching to Motorola Type II Smart Zone and for voice, analog and APCO-25 Common Air Interface.
I am mainly interested in monitoring our local and state police, fire and rescue. My physical area is in a semi-rural subdivision without a whole lot of interference. Currently, I am using a Realistic Pro-2006 with a whip antenna and it does fine. I thinke with the new one, I would prefer an outside antenna.

There are SO many variables and SO many opinions they should all be condensed into a pat answer and the thread made sticky. (sigh) Sorry 'bout the sarcasm but frankly I'm SO tired of answering antenna questions, hundreds, no, thousands, no, MILLIONS of them! AAARRRGGGHHH! (;->)
Now to get just a BIT serious, MY pat answer is whatever works for YOU. Smokey says "Only YOU can prevent forest fires." and I say first do your homework, (check out the specs and eliminate the snake oil) then experiment until you find what suits your requirements at your particular location.
