Here in Florida, lightning capital of the world, we have zero requirements for lightning rods on the roof of single family residences. None at all, yet invariably a house gets an attic fire during a bad storm. If you go to the north eastern states (The colonies), air terminals and ground rods are installed on virtually every home. Granted some of these homes are over 200 years old, but the insurance companies, fire districts or whomever saw to it that these air terminals and grounding systems were placed.
It makes me nervous to know that my modern home has an ungrounded metal chimney that is capped with metal. I ground my antennas, but that chimney. to be grounded, would require either driving a rod into the middle of the living room floor (tiled) or heavy braid along the roof line. If I do this, I will be the exception.
