Antenna Style Question

I got bit by the scanner bug again. I’m looking to put an antenna on the roof and was searching through the forum for the best one for my situation. I’ve never had a roof top antenna before. I always used a telescoping antenna on the handheld. The primary frequencies are 400 MHz and 800 MHz trunking systems in all directions. I guess beams are out. That leaves discone and Ferret. I’m leaning toward a Scantenna but, I don’t know if it’s too directional compared to a Sputnik. Any help would be much appreciated.

One last thing, using the cheap telescopic from Radio Shack I can get NYC 30 miles away. But the local State Police tower (50 watts) 3 miles away is unperceivable. Am I missing something?

You didnt mention what scanner you are using. This factor is important. Some GRE R/S scanners overload when big antennas are used for VHF coverage. BC/Unidens usually dont have that problem. Post more info.

Currently a Pro-92, a BCD-396T in a week or two.
