Greetings,

I moved into a house with a pre-installed Hy-Gain AV-680 but it is not mounted very well (it's leaning bad on a 10 ft. 1.3" OD galvanized pipe) so I want to get it on a proper support mast (and relocate it). The manual for that antenna calls for a 1 3/4" - 2 1/2" OD steel water pipe. I prefer to go with the larger diameter since this antenna does not require guying up to 65 MPH winds. My local Lowe's and Home Depot do not carry any pipe that large. I am new to this hobby so my questions are these...

1. Where might I get pipe of this size?
2. What are you all using as a support mast?
3. What is the maximum height above the highest mast support that you recommend mounting the antenna?

Thanks,

Look for a fence supply shop in your area. I use chain link fence top rail for my antenna masts. It is available in sections up to 21' and I believe up to 3" diameter.

I just sourced some 2 1/2 OD Schedule 40 galvanized for a reasonable price at a local metals shop. Now my question is this...

It is 13 ft. from the ground to the eave and if I use the entire 20 ft. length I will be 7 ft. above the highest support (on the eave). Is this enough support or should I lower it a bit?

If the mfr recommends galv steel water pipe then I would use that and not fence rail. The Hy-Gain AV-680 is 26ft tall with a lot of leverage on the mount. My opinion is 7ft of 2 1/2 pipe above the support spot unguyed should be ok.
