Ok, this is a continuation of something I've been tinkering with. While attempting to tune my Radio Shack antenna, I shortened the stinger too much. Unable to find a replacement stinger that was the same diameter, I replaced the ferrule with an Opek AS-2 since it has a much more common diameter for currently made stingers (0.100"). I borrowed the stinger out of my Tram 300 antenna just to see if the ferrule setup was functional. I can hear conversations quite well, but as it is, I'm getting a high swr, 3:1. I noticed that if I put my hand near the stinger, the swr drops down to like 1:1. I suppose this would be cool if my arm was 8' long, and I could just drive down the road with my hand out the window near the stinger, but since it isn't, I'm wondering what would be the next step to lowering the swr. I've tried raising and lowering the stinger in the ferrule, and that isn't doing the trick.
