I've got an old trunkmount antenna on the roof, kinda ghetto.
It works ok for everything but 800mhz.

If I open the squelch a bit I can hear the CTL channel, sometimes a bit broken.
Decode rate is usually somewhere between 5-10%, not very good obviously.

I do have an extension cable hooked up to the antenna, is there a way I can find out if a better cable would provide better results?

Using RG58.
Also in some places in town I can pick this system up in my car using a UHF Trunkmount Antenna (Antenex B4505C)

The System I'm trying to Monitor is Springfield/Greene County.
I think it might just be the loss, why it's not working very good.

This is pretty screwy, I took out the extension cord and I'm getting a worse signal then before.
Also I have the RS Magmount in a room inside the house (on a filing cabinet, and I can monitor the system from there).
Decode rate goes from 99% to all over the place, seems like in kinda fades in/out.

How much cable are you running?

Anything over than 8' or so of RG58 in my book for 800Mhz is total garbage. You'll probably have better results with the antenna connected directly to the radio, indoors.

The length of the run determines the least expensive cabling option. I have an antenna mounted just above the roof-line for 800/900Mhz RX, and about 20' of cable... LMR400 cable, double sheilded, it gets the job done.
