XP is not done. Mainstream Bank ATM's still use XP CE, AND still get support updates. major corporations who pay MS still get those updates also.

The 'update' was a install over the existing ZA I think. I DID contact ZA, and they say "XP is not supported so I am SOL". In fact the so called guru got very pissed that I knew more about ZA killing the printing part of XP than he did.
There have been numerous screens coming up to update, nor more updates for me.
I am following this thread so I can get something better that works on XP when I do a complete reload of the OS.

do you still have your product key? which version of ZA was this?

there is a site that has old version installers:

Old versions of Windows, Mac and Linux Software, Apps & Abandonware Games - Download at OldVersion.com

get the version closest to yours, and try to see if that update comes in, and manually do updates till you find the culprit, then run the old version again with that update in mind and stop updates at that point.

Bitdefender 2016 Total Security seems good.

It gets high marks in tests and runs unobtrusively in the background.

Bitdefender also has a free anti-virus download available.

I was using Microsoft Security Essentials for a short time while I looked around for a "real" AV program. Well I found Bit Defender and put it on the computer and disabled MSE or so I thought. It was showing as being disabled, the icon was and is in red not the green that tells you it is operational.

So I have been using BD now for some time with no threat notices until recently. In the last couple of days BD has come up with some threat messages and at the same time MSE has also been giving me the same warnings even though it is still disabled? MSE also produced a threat warning and cleaned my computer and BD didn't say anything.

I know you are not supposed to run two AV's together as they can interfere with one and other that is why i turned MSE off, at least it is showing as being disabled but it is very active. I am now having second thoughts about MSE as my main AV program.

PS as i was typing this message MSE not BD threat warning popped up telling me it had already detected and cleaned a threat. I think I am beginning to really warm up to MSE

Which version of Windows are you using? Windows Defender is not the same thing on Windows 7 as it is on 8 and 10. On 7 it's a basic monitor and Security Essentials is the antivirus, on 8 and 10 Defender is the antivirus program (basically Security Essentials with a different name).

You are correct, I have had Windows Defender on the brain this morning. It is Microsoft Security Essentials.

I have gotten away with CCleaner and Malware Antibytes in addition to MSE. Seems to work fine for me. Although I don't have anything against giving something else a shot.
