1. They allow the public to do ride alongs

2. They list their radio freqs (at the end of the newsletter)

Many fire departments allow ride-alongs and frequencies aren't secret. Many agencies publish their frequencies.

According to the website, the Antonia FPD has been supported by property taxes since 1972. It ain't a private club. They should allow ride-a-longs. The public should raise stink if they don't.

Very few agencies publish their freqs. I have never heard of any other agency that offers ridealongs to the public. Who are you guys?

Well, I'm not trying to flame you by any stretch of the imagination, however, in the St. Louis Metro area most agencies have made their frequencies public. Take a look many of the websites, the information is public, and they want their public to have the option to listen. I find it respectable.

The ride along, I'm sure it's like any law enforcement ride along. Get in, ask questions when appropriate, and you're not allowed to leave the truck. I'm not sure what's so wrong with that either. Do you think they allow the ride alongs to give CPR or apply medical treatment to people at scene?

I'm someone who may have been monitoring fire frequencies for too many years or may have visited too many fire agency websites.

I don't want to rain on anybody's parade but a fair number of agencies publish their frequencies on the web.

And even if they don't, just about anybody can find an agency's frequencies by a web search, often in a matter of minutes.

Ride-alongs are not so common but they do exist. Many stipulations apply, of course. A dress code I can't forget goes: "grey or navy blue shirt, navy blue pants, black shoes-- black tennis shoes OK."

Antonia FD is to be commended for its public relations.

Most FDs stopped ride alongs due to insurance issues.
