Is the test for A+ and Network+ hard or is it all depends if you know it or not. I'm thinking about taking the tests for both since I'm going to college learning the wonderful world of computers.

The tests were hard for me

Mostley because of my learning disability, I allways have a hard time with Taking tests.

I can pretty much sit down and show you all kinds of stuff on the computer itself no problem, but when it comes to taking tests to prove that I can do that, I am terrible.

It took me 3 times to pass each one.
Some people pass each one the first time

I believe the second part of the A+ test is Harder than the first.

I got my certification January of 2008

I had been working in the IT industry with some large corporations for almost 25 years without any certifications. This was very common back in the 80's & 90's. At one job a new manager put a tremendous emphasis on certifications. It didn't matter if you knew your stuff, if you weren't certified you were a second class employee. We were forced to get A+ certified, which was very elementary. If we weren't already at that level we wouldn't have been there to begin with. Then we had to become Dell certified, or we would not be allowed to work on Dell computers under warranty, even something as simple as replacing a battery. The Dell certificate requirements were a total joke! Then came the Microsoft certs. Those made more sense, but we were doing fine without them.

The time and money spent on obtaining all these certifications caused our entire department to fall way behind on our important projects, and consumed funds that were badly needed for equipment and software. The boss was fired.

I found this article many years ago and book marked it for occasions such as this. It's a good read, three pages long.

I took one of those CompUSA specials "take test now, pay for it later" and forgot to pay. That was 8 years ago and I haven't found a need to take the newer version of the A+. Around here a lot of companies don't care for any of the CompTIA test since they tend to be "cram before the exam" type of tests instead of using theory/experience. That'ts the main reason I haven't went back for the A+ or Network+ that I studied for. Eventually I will but not right now.

I just looked over a practice exam for the A+, and it looks pretty basic..

Try taking the CCNA exam.

I will eventually. The current job doesn't pay me any more for it and I don't plan on leaving them any time soon so it's on the back burner. Had a friend who just took the New Haven course and got the CCNA in under a month. The price was a little steep for me with that route though.

hate to be the guy thats peeing on the parade... but how many serious employeers want this? I mean, except the future shops and best buys? personally (no offence to you guys) but most a+ techs I meet, don't know jack about computers, and just read it all from a book....Its so easy to buy the answers to a+, network+, ccna, mcse, whatever you want, I find most employers care about a resume, not a list of papers

I agree on the CompTIA tests. However, it's easier to lie on a resume than it is to cheat on a Cisco test.

I was a hiring manager for the IT department of a major gov't agency and A+ cert usually meant the applicant didn't understand the IT business. The thing posted about Dell a couple posts back made me laugh- we went through the same thing. You had to look up answers on Dell's web site while taking the test. What a joke. Anyone whose crowning achievement is getting A+ certified is naive, at best.
People who took the MCSE or CCNA quickie schools- not gonna hire em. Anyone can shove enough down their brain to pass those in a boot camp school, but in the real world those quickie cert people are far more worthless than an untrained but intelligent person. The quickie-trained people think they know something, but without practical experience they'll do more damage than good.
