No .... I havn't heard as to If they are going to up grade to digital but they are building a new call center.

Now... It is rumoured that they are building it because the can act as a call center for alot of towns across the us. Sounds like there farming out the work for revenue.

I asked some friends who work for the S.C.E.M. an they said at this time it was not financialy feasable to do an up grade to the system.

But I figured if they got enough Homeland Defence money from the FEDS then it would be posible!!!

I'm not there accountant so I don't know what there doing with there money....

So it is at this time your guess is as good as mine.

I know that in my department we been getting cutbacks left and right from the state, My revenue comes from the Alcohal and Tobaco tax. Thats for Wild life and Parks.

I'm pretty sure the 911 tax for kansas has a lot of sorces it gets it money from IE phone bill and general funds to keep its operation going. Not to mention FEMA funding.

So the money is there but how they choose to spend it is up to them. I know my department just got onto the trunked system as of 2000 and there is plans to add more small town like Gardenplain, Mulvane and Nt.Hope and Rose Hill. But those comunities need to anny up the money for there Talk group slots.

Since I know the Mayor of Rose Hill he says It doesnt make since to him to anny up the money since the ( The County) lease the water tower to have there repaeter on it. He thinks it need to be a trade off. But he also wasnt the one who set it up to begin with.

Wichita/SG Co system

I wouldn't be surprised if they were talking about it. Kansas is in the midst of upgrading their 77 site conventional 800 "backbone" to a wide area digital trunked system.

With federal homeland security money the plan calls for the state to own the system and the radios and lease them at cost to local agencies for interoperability. They are working on it now- already all the state radios in Trooper B have been exchanged for digital mobiles and portables.

I wonder how many other states in the union are doing or have done this?

I am begining to think those Mallitia nuts was onto something when the was going strong in the early 90's. ya know those guys, Black Hellicopters, new world order. those sorta of guys!!!

That would also explain the need for such a large call center here in Wichita.

Do you know if there building a new call center in Topeka or something similar to that in addition of the new tower?

The State of Kansas has accelerated thee completion of a digital 800 system due to the passing of an interoperability law last legislative session. They plan on having it complete in 2 years. They are currently issuing the new radios now. Rumor has it that Sedgwick and Butler counties have already signed on to join the system when it is complete. The ultimate goal is to have all public service agencies on this system for interoperability.

Hey Chiefsfan:
I found this on another post. Where did you find this info at?
I seen this a while back and I thought it was relevant to this post.

If what you are saying here is true, then the call center would make since to have on built here. But they are being real quite about the operation. The question is now how much longer before the switch? The call center is going into its second year of the build. So far no tower has been erected, but then again they don't have to erect a huge tower to an existing system but just upgrade the ones they all ready have.

BTW.... FEMA talk group has been real active here lately. It rare that I here them but I here the same EOC guys talking to the radio shop guys doing allot of test and talking about the system.

Hmmmm.... Change maybe a coming soon!!!! I maybe a breaking down to buy that new Digital scanner sooner then I thinks!!!

I was hopen to wait till the prices dropped.

I don't know about that! The Kansas radio plan has been around for about 15 years- just no $$$ or will to drive it. Who (outside of public safety) cared about throwing money into "interoperability" before 9-11?

Here is a state press release about the program from early this year:

Just poken fun at an old issue. :D

The militia concerns back in the late 80’s and early 90’s were the formation of "One Government" less the independents of state matters. A sort of New World Order which involved such matters as to what we are talking about. The states and its agencies would now all be tied into one central government meaning we as a state would have no say in our own matters. It would be decided by the Feds.

Now let me remind you that this was being talked about 20 yrs ago. And when Ruby Ridge and Waco TX occurred they went nuts.

They seem to shut up when OKC occurred (How Ironic)

I hate to admit it but I had a grandfather who was very dis satisfied with the current system, so he was all ears when it came to militia topics. Growing up around that sort of talk puts a bleak outlook on a kid.

It will be interesting to see how this system will work.

A. Will we now be able to here Topeka talk to KC in Wichita?
B. How much more encryption will now be used like for NARC, KBI US Marshals? Like the do in Aus.
C. Will there be so many talk groups that the standard scanner can not house the entire selection?
What is there now? 65000 in a Type 2 sys?
D. What flavor of a Trunking sys will they go with?

That all I got Down in South Central
Cheers

Thanks to everyone for all the Info!!!

I'm in the process of looking at new radios and thought if we were going digital that might be the way to go. I kind of like the new 246T. It might be a fun radio to have and wait and see what happenes with the digital world. I'm sure it will happen it's just a question of when.
Thanks again for taking the time to respond.
Best wishes for the Holidays,

Jeff
