I'm about 20-25 mins from you.

I'd suggest USECA (Utica Shelby Emergency Communication Association).

They have monthly testing sessions in Mt. Clemens.

After 50 some years of thinking about it I took my test last month at the USCA site. Great group.

I procrastinated for 7 years before I took the test. Afterwords, my only thought was, "Why didn't I do this years ago?!" It really is pretty simple for any hobbiest such as yourself. I also recommend the free helper tests at QRZ.com, as well as eham.net
