• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Any opinions on the Sirio 5/8 10/11 M antenna?

All the sources I find seem to concur that this is a pretty good antenna. Indeed, there have been discussions in RR back a ways, but hoping to get any new takes on this antenna. This time I think it wise to make a rather short height-above-ground setup with the feedpoint 18-22 ft above the ground.

Yes, I am aware this is not optimum for dx, etc but survivability and low maintenance carry the day here. It is still over a half-wavelength over ground, so I expect reasonable performance.
So, please let me know what you like or dislike about the 1600.

And--don't forget-- everybody loves a good DX story or propagation miracle yarn about their favorite antenna.

thank you!

I don't see a 1600 base antenna, which Sirio are you discussing? I recently installed a Sirio 2016 5/8 for someone and although it was an unusual design compared to the american made antennas I'm familiar with, it did perform very well. I didn't have a known antenna at the same location to compare with, but I was impressed with the contacts it made in the short time I played with it.

Duh! You are so right PRC Guy! I had some major surgery last week and brain is still fuzzy from the knockout. It is the 2016 I am asking about, very perceptive of you to be so far ahead of the doddering old fool here.

So, thanks for the correction, sorely needed, and perhaps we can hear some info on this antenna. Everything I see reads good on this antenna, so please speak up guys, if there is anything of interest to share. Thanks for the answer, and I do have a good feeling about this antenna. I will use it some for dx, when the rare occasion presents itself, and daily will use it for low-band vhf monitoring and sdr fun.

Hello p1879: This is a antenna that has been out for a while, the Sirio maybe a copy?. A few of the locals used them with reasonable good performance. But they eventually bent at the base area and then broke from high winds. If you were to use nylon line to guy wire support the antenna at a mid point, that might save it from damage. Good luck.
