I have a RS Pro-97, but I am thinking of returning it to get an HF receiver and wondering if any also handle scanner frequencies? It would be nice to have one unit for everything.

Yes there are plenty of wideband receivers available, thing is unless your will to spend quite a lot of money the radios tend to be compromises at best. I have a BR330T it covers 100 kHz - 1.3 GHz but really wouldn't consider using to down on the HF bands. If I want to listen to SW/HF I'll use my Grundig Satellit 700.

Sounding like jack of all trades applies here. That's okay. Nothing wrong with specialization. Just curious if there was something that did an excellent job on both.

cheers,

If you want a portable, the Yaesu VX-2R is hard to beat for the price. It is the discontinued cousin of the VX-3R but I think it's a better performer. You can often find it on e-bay for $75 or less. It covers HF well with a good antenna and scanner frequencies very well with a replacement antenna like the Diamond RH-77CA. You're also set with a dual band ham radio if you want to get your ham license.

The AOR-8200MK3/ICOM-R20 do an excellent on hf/vhf/uhf and they are wideband receivers with no trunking.

The Uniden BR330T is the only wideband receiver that also does trunking, AFAIK. All of the other wideband receivers mentioned above won't trunk track, which may or may not be an issue for you, depending on what you want to monitor. A hand held wideband receiver is a compromise on the HF bands compared to a dedicated tabletop HF receiver and a good outside HF antenna. JMO.
