Hello everyone,

I just got my Tech license last month and have been enjoying hamming it up. I live in Philadelphia PA and have purchased a repeater directory, the only problem I see with it is that it does not include any information on the simplex bands. I have a few questions for those who dont mind.

1- How or where can i find a list of simplex bands?

2- Do i need a specific PL tone when I TX on a simplex band in order for others to hear me?

3- Is it permitted for anyone to TX on a repeater frequency without a or the proper PL code; will it interfere with
normal communications?

Any input into my questions will be greatly appreciated as I am trying to learn as much as I can.

Thank You
Rick

Since some of your questions are rather universal, and not specific to Philadelphia, I'll go ahead and answer a few:

1- How or where can i find a list of simplex bands?

Start here:

Band Plan

And then see if you can find something mroe specific with google. A search of "two meter simplex frequencies in Philadelphia" came up with 33,000 hits. I'm sure the first dozen or so would actually be pertinent.

2- Do i need a specific PL tone when I TX on a simplex band in order for others to hear me?

Generally, no. Simplex operation is usually done with receivers in carrier squelch.

3- Is it permitted for anyone to TX on a repeater frequency without a or the proper PL code; will it interfere with
normal communications?

Two part question, so a two part answer...

Yes, it's "legal" so long as you don't interfere with the repeater operations.

Is it advisable? No. First, it's quite possible that you could be interfering with the repeater users and not even know it, and if so, the FCC will rule in favor of a coordinated repeater over any uncoordinated use of a repeater frequency. Even if you don't have PL, your signal can and will cause degradation and interference to repeater use.

The ARRL Repeater Directory certainly does have Simplex frequency information listed for each band at the front of the book, but there is no information published that I'm aware of that is "Simplex band" because no such band exists. All Simplex channels are part of various VHF and UHF bands. If you want to plug in some channels start with 146.52, 146.55, and 146.58, and on UHF use 446.000.

The Amateur Philadelphia band plans are governed by the ARCC org.

Scroll down to the "Bandplans" and click on that and let the pdf download.
This maps out all of the bands usage locally as not all of these orgs use the ARRL band plan.
