On the DVM topic, I like to have at least two (but I probably have a dozen) meters because its nice to keep a pristine high end unit for making precise measurements at home and a knock around unit for field work. Most hams don't get into very small current measurements like a few mA or less but its nice to have that in your best meter if you ever do need it.
You can buy great and fairly accurate DVMs that will measure DC current up to 20A and just about anything else you might need to do for $20 or less. If you drop it off a roof or accidentally burn it up trying to measure your car starter it won't break the bank. Just don't do that with a Fluke 8060A.
