I have heard of tow and taxi companies both using encryption to keep their competitors from hearing their dispatches and scooping up their parties before they can arrive.

IANAL But since it is illegal to decode it unless you are the intended recipent then I would also take it that giving out the information to other (which is in itself not allowed) would also be illegal.

It doesnt matter how widely known something is.
If its illegal its still illegal. Its widely known how to defraud a payphone but I bet youwont get out of court by saying "but your honer its so widely known...."

There is no justification for doing something illegal.

Now as for where they are comming from. Well since breaking an encryption (even inversion) is illegal in the US then to do it on an out of country signal would still be illegal since you are in the US.

It doesnt matter how widely known something is.

You're still missing the point. Transmitting only 1 sideband of a signal (which is what "inversion" is) isn't encryption, so it's legal to do what's necessary to understand what's being said. If it weren't, listening to a SSB signal, unless you were a party to it, would be illegal. (The only difference between "SSB" and "inversion" is the carrier frequency - RF vs. audio.)

Your argument is as flawed as your definition of "speech inversion."

SSB and "speech inversion" scrambling are not even related other than they both transfer an audio signal different than its orignal sound. :roll:
