Hello, newbie here. I have a 396xt and programmed it using Freescan and downloaded my frequencies from here on radio reference (the premium service).

I'm just wondering if anyone can give me any input as to what I should/should not expect to be picking up here. I've got OPP but the Sarnia PD channels just seem to be garbled. The scanner stops at those frequencies but it is either silent or digital garble. Not sure if it's something I've done, or a weak signal.

I have played around the with the P25 settings after holding down "Hold" while restarting the unit and it does not seem to make any difference. At times when it is sitting on the PD channel I see NAC:58E or something similar to that come up on my display - does that mean anything?

Any input would be appreciated.

You can't listen to the Sarnia Police or Fire.

You get the joys of listening to opp, ambulance, rural fire, MTO Maintenance, and MTO Enforcement. Customs at the bridge is very mundane, the odd transmission about sending a transport in for inspection is about all you ever hear. Michigan State police, USCG, Selfridge ANG are some that I would add to your scanner however.

CVECO is a must

As others have already mentioned most of Sarnia public safety is unfortunately unscannable. Lots of good listening on the other side of the river though from MPSCS. Also, do some searches in the 160's and 170's.. I've found a fair bit of US Border Patrol and FBI comms there, P25 digital... sometimes ENC, sometimes not. Good listening when it isn't.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I loaded the frequencies from across the border with the Port Huron area police and got plenty of chatter there. My biggest challenge seems to be radio placement at home to get the best reception.

I'm also finding I'm getting a lot of open channels where I'll just get static but nothing there, including some of the OPP frequencies and the CVECO channel was doing that too. But I'm still in the early stages and finding things out for myself. But I wanted to pass along what I was finding.
