As long as you are realistic in what you expect out of these type of units, they can be interesting toys, but not much more than that. Yes they will pick up BBC, Deutche-Welle, Radio Netherlands, RCI, and such, no problem.

That business is pretty weird -- all sorts of different stuff, some kinda cool.

But a smaller -- perhaps much smaller -- shortwave receiver than that one would be my Yaesu VX-2 & VX-3. The added bonus is that they also receive the broadcast FM spectrum & lots of the VHF/UHF commercial, public safety, & ham radio spectrum, including transit capability on the ham bands.

The high-ERP shortwave stations come in OK on it, for example, Radio Canada International, using whatever transit site (somewhere in North America, I assume), that would be S-9 +40 on my Kenwood R-5000, comes in OK on the VX-2 with stock antenna, depending on how I hold it, plus you get the benefit of a digital freq display.
