I was just curious if anyone else was expecting a 396XT this week. I went ahead and bit the bullet and ordered me one last week from CEI after reading some of the early reviews. It’s supposed to arrive this Wednesday. That’s two days too long for me, hahaha. I already have FreeScan ready to go so I should have it up and running in a few minutes. I already have a 396T but I’m thinking I’ll go ahead and sell it for a reasonable price. I really have no need for two portables. Keep the reviews coming.

If you monitor Mil-Air in NW FL, I'll bet you'll like the XT. The sound is better on the AM mode and you can offset the volume per channel as well.

I got mine last Thursday and have been constantly fiddling with the new features. I'm taking notes so that I can write a comprehensive "30 day honeymoon review" once I've had time to fully explore all of the radio's features and to see how it performs overall. My early impression is that it's a great radio however, and I am not at all disappointed by my purchase.

3 days for this beginner...

I'm a newbie to the scene... and the 396XT will be my first scanner (since I was in High School too-many-years-to-mention-ago, lol). It should arrive on Thu.

I'm still doing research on which software to use, as I'm already a little whelmed (not over yet) by all there is to learn about the hobby AND the scanner AND the software...

Yup, sold mine on eBay last week. They are selling for around $350-$380 (on average). I'm pretty good knowing the best way to work eBay and got rid of mine for $406. I saw one sell for $509 yesterday! That's a fluke though, the buyer had no clue...why that person didn't go buy the XT instead shows they don't know the scanner market... if you can get to $400 you should be happy, but I'd expect around $360-$380...

Best of luck with your old and new 396! Mine shows up tomorrow... I finally chose what software I want and will be programming that tonight so I'm ready to go! Ciao.

I got one that UPS sez will be at my doorstep in the morning. Tonight is watching baseball while building a codeplug for it in FreeScan. :D

I went with Scanner Master, both to support the sites that support this site, and because CEI has/had a long history of refusing to sell to Canadians, citing the fictitious "digital scanner license".

I'm on day 2 and so far I have nothing but praise. I had a chance to play with Tone-Out and it was almost dead on for my area. Maybe a digit off but I bump it against the tone-out chart to verify. I still can’t get over Multi-site and digital only support. This has made my life so much easier in tracking and identifying new talkgroups. Before I had to enter the talkgoups twice due to all the sites we have in my area. From my location I can pick up 3 of the 5 towers. I’m loving the temp lockout feature. This was long overdue. In my area it’s mostly VHF (150’s), UHF (460’s) for public service and a large DOD P25 (380-400). I’m seeing an increase in strength across the board. This morning at work I brought up P25 site 104 which is very weak for me due to distance. Using the RS800 antenna I’m getting 2 bars. Normally I would have 0 or 1 bar flickering. Well back to trying out the radio. Love the audio. :D

This REALLY IS their top of the line Handheld scanner.

Maybe I misunderstood... I am new to the hobby... but I thought the BCD396T WAS their top of the line Handheld (before the XT was released)... was there another model that was better that I missed? I certainly didn't intend to mislead anyone... what model did Uniden make that was higher on their scale?

Yup, sold mine on eBay last week. That was a lame listing. You should have sold it without all of the lies.

What lies? The only thing I said was that I was the owner, instead of the guy I bought it from. But I 100% believed him (from all of the evidence- he said he couldn't hear anything and I saw that he had the Squelch turned way up, so it makes sense), so I didn't think it was a lie (not a single mark on the unit and the plastic was still on it)... anyway, sorry you didn't like the listing- the guy that bought it was thrilled (has sent several e-mails saying so). Can't please everyone I guess.

Two hours. 20% pay cut. Hah. No wonder I take everything ebay sellers say with a grain of salt.

Yes, always good to take eBay listings with a grain of salt. But for the record- I wasn't out to deceive anyone either. Why would you laugh at my paycut? That just seems mean.

I shouldnt of said anything, but since you asked... First you said you need to sell it because you have to pay bills. But you didnt seem to have a problem paying for a new xt. Second, its not their top of the scanner, its a discontinued model. Im done.

I'm just going to say I'm confused and leave it at that. Anyway, in answer to your question, the eBay auction said "This [396T] REALLY IS their top of the line Handheld scanner" but you posted that you sold it to buy a 396XT. Looking back up the thread, the two quotes below seem inconsistent but there's probably an explanation I missed. BTW, I'm not judging you and you don't owe me or anyone else here an explanation. None of this fits together in any obvious way which is why you're getting questions here. I'm done on this, don't want to start or perpetuate some kind of pile-on.

It's been a couple of years since I've actively partricipated in an online forum like this and forgot how it can all be. I can understand the confusion (and maybe even the criticism). I'll be more careful about how I share myself here.

I don't feel the need to explain, and thanks jnewell for being civil about it and choosing just to be "confused". Generous of you. Still, let me say that when I posted/started my auction (Mar 19th) this WAS their top of the line handheld (as far as my research told me) as the XT was not yet released by Uniden (until the first week of Apr). And as far as the T being discontinued, they are still selling it on Uniden, so the term discontinued is ~somewhat~ arguable.

And I DID need the money to pay my bills. Did I ONLY use it to pay my bills? Well that depends on how you look at my financials (income/expenses) so I could see how you could interpret that as deceitful. I'm not claiming to always make the best choices for how I spend my money. The fact is that I DID need money to pay my bills and I got that (and more) by selling some other items on eBay and CL.

Anyway, I don't want to feel the need to perpetuate this kind of interaction here either, but for my own piece of mind I just wanted to say I wasn't out to lie to anyone or deceive them in a malicious way, and I apologize to anyone who took offense to the way I posted my auctions. If nothing else, I'll be sure to be EXTRA careful about the wording in my upcoming auctions.

Happy Scanning!
