Just wondering if anyone has found any birdies on a 396XT? I haven't run across any yet, but I'm assuming there's a couple out there. Thanks,

So I removed the antenna and started searching from 25Mhz up to 1300Mhz (broadcast screens all off) and here's what I found for birdies:

31.05
65.35
72.45

Not too bad for 1275Mhz of spectrum! 31.05 is between 2 VHF-LO channels, 65.35 is in the video of TV-3, and 72.45 is in area of Fixed Control and Relay. Of course the IF Shift could be used to clean up these 3 frequencies if necessary. I'm definitely impressed.

And not to start an RF performance discussion, but my new XT blows away my T in almost all bands, especially UHF-T. The only band that is close (and where I wish it had better performance) is the 800Mhz band. I probably had a bad T and never knew it!

I do not notice too much difference in the RF reception in the XT vs. my classic, but it's possible that you had a problem with the classic. I use the same external antennas and RS800MHz for monitoring.

OT: The P25 decode is much improved using the automatic method on the XT vs. the classic on my systems.

I don't have any signal at 31.05 or 72.45 on my XT. I do have a full scale signal on 65.35 that appears to be a legitimate signal as the strength goes way down if disconnect the antenna. I also hear the 65.35 with my 396T.

All three are the same strength with or without the antenna, the sure sign of an internally generated signal. As I mentioned on another thread, what surprises me is not that I have a couple of birdies, but that IFX doesn't affect them one bit. I wonder if anyone has had it work for them?

Well if they are birdies then your XT has birdies that mine doesn't. ???

That's not unusual. Birdies are typically caused by insufficient shielding in the IF section of the receiver. Small differences in the manufacturing process can lead to variations. If you could do a sweep on your XT from 25 to 1300 I'd be interested in what you come up with. If you do find one I'd also be interested to know if the IFX moves the birdie. I think it took less than 5 minutes to get my list.

BTW, just because IFX does not move the birdie on my XT does not mean it's not a birdie. It could also mean that IFX does not function properly on all internal signals. Also, an external signal source at 31Mhz that has the same signal strenth with or without an antenna is impossible. If you are a licensed Amateur, then you certainly know that!

Steve is correct. The 31.05 and 72.45 birdies he mentions are there. I have to remove the antenna to hear them. If I connect any kind of antenna they go away.

Sounds like they are weaker on your XT. Mine are the same strength with or without an antenna. Again, no big deal since VHF-LO is dead in the Northeast and 31.05 falls between the 2 channelized frequencies according to my old trusty Police Call (31.04 and 31.06). My classic T was much worse with one birdie in the VHF-HI band and one in UHF-T which is our main PS band in Metro Boston (470 and 482).
