I have RITERN in my scanner and can copy some traffic. However most of it comes in garbled.

Is there encryption in widespread use? Or is it a matter of tweaking the quality in the scanner settings?

Any help appreciated.

I noticed on your last post you mentioned a 785D . Is that the scanner you are useing?
Bearcat BC-785D, if it is I think the problem is it is only a 3600 baud and RITERN is a 9600 baud system. maybe someone else can confirm that as I have a PRO96 and have no problem, and yes there is quite a bit of encription in use.

RITERN Usage

I'll be at the Quonset Point Airshow this 23-24, June in North Kingstown.
I've got RITERN programmed into my Uniden BCD-996T.

I'm anxious to see if I hear anything.
I'll check back and report any activity.

See you on the flightline!

RITERN Follow-up Report

I attended Quonset Point Airshow in N Kingstown RI last weekend.

Unfortunately, I did not hear a sound on the RITERN system.
Don't know if my program settings were incorrect or ???

According to RadioRef database, I see N Kingstown PD listed on the system.
I can report that I still heard alot of activity on their older freqs 155.58 pl (118.8), etc.

Sorry I can't be more helpful on this. Still a work in progress for me.

Question: Are the control channels for the RITERN system always active?

Are the RISP using RITERN full time? IF not, any word on when they will make the move from VHF?

I live in Narragansett and for the last year, I have been having trouble picking up N-PD and N-FD on my Pro96. For the last day, I have noticed that RITERN has been quiet. When I turn to the control channel, it is quiet.

Has your Pro-96 been upgraded to pick up 9600 baud systems? The early versions did not.

I can pick up NPD and NFD sometimes (usually when I am outside), inside the signal drops. If I go to the control channel inside the % drops to 0-68 sometimes goes into the 90’s. Outside it stays steady at 98.

I used win96 to program it.

I am hoping there is just a programming issue

The CPU is 1.3 and the dsp-app is 1.4. I do have the 800MHz antenna on too.

How close are you to the site in Narragansett? Your radio could be desensing from too much signal. Just a guess. Try turning on the attenuator on the control channel and see if that helps.

I think the antenna is located by South County Hospital and that is roughly 15 min from here

I will try to turn on the att. and see if that helps recption

Thanks for the replies.

I have the scanner programmed with these channels as conventional only. I know my scanner won't track a 9600 Baud system.

I have been able to pick up Fire and Police activity, but without using talkgroups I have no idea what I am listening to. Especially since I am not from the area and unfamiliar with the street names.

I am picking up a good amount of encrypted activity, which I mistakenly thought was bad reception.
