With all that traffic backed up waiting you would think there might be some interesting back and forth between the ships similar to what you get on 123.45 with transoceanic pilots shooting the breeze so to speak.

The media makes it sound like there is a lot of traffic backed up because of the bridge collapse but there is always a lot of inbound ships anchored just below Bay Bridge and again near mouth of Chesapeake Bay. Now either they get rerouted today or it will start getting crowded.

So I guess I am just saying there could always be the chit-chat that you mention. A lot of foreign crews so wonder how many speak same language.

I'd bet there might be an increase in radio and ship traffic through the canal in the attached photo. About a million years ago I was in the Coast Guard and when we left the shipyards in Baltimore our captain decided to go this way. That was a 378' cutter that drew 19' so I'd expect some good sized ships could be routed through here via Delaware Bay.

Looks like to me that there's really no other way out than through the bridge...1711571798926.png

Actually I stand corrected. I was thinking the way into the northernmost part of Chesapeake Bay was before that...ah well, it was October of 1982 when I transited that canal, and half the time I can't remember what happened last week...so never mind!

There are 10 ships stuck inside the Port of Baltimore that can't leave until the collapsed bridge is removed. It will be a long process of being cut up and removed in sections, as the crane only has 1000 ton capacity.

All the ships enroute or in the Annapolis Anchorage can reroute to other ports.

Forgot to add to previous post that a lot of coastal maritime traffic is tug and barge. I am sure numerous tugs are waiting to be able to get underway also

Many tank barges carrying all types of fuel. Plus other types of cargo like a container barge.
