I tried using these two frequencies when I was in NC a few days ago. I saw a lot of troopers but never got any chatter on these frequencies. Does NC still use them ?

Maybe a little in the Western part of the state but
in Central NC these highband VHF freqs were replaced with VIPER.
I will let others from other parts of NC chime in.

I haven't heard the VHF repeater in the Asheville area for quite some time. Nor in the Charlotte area (Concord repeater I think).

The extenders are still active in Henderson County and a few other surrounding counties where VIPER hasn't taken over yet...but you have to be really close to hear them (about a mile away).

Highband 7 (Concord Area) is offline. I've got it programmed in my Astro Spectra & it won't hit anymore. VIPER is very active SHP wise here. The guys around here (Troop E) haven't had the VHF high equipment in the cars for a while unless it's their own personal equipment.

I believe they are used occaisionally in the H 4 and the H 6 districts (154.68) because I still get hits on them from Concord area.....H4 area of Gaston county and H6 area of Moore county....

The way it was being handled when I worked in a SHP radio shop a few years back was like this. For Districts/Counties that did not have good 800 TRS coverage the "jump and run" VHF Hi in car cross band repeaters were installed/left in service. For districts/counties that had good 800 TRS service and the individual officers had been issued 800 walkies they were removed. The problem was that with the increasing amount of equipment officers must have in their cars and the amount of stuff in or on the consoles there was not enough room for more than 1 walkie charger to be installed. With good 800 TRS coverage in the counties there was simply no need to relay the traffic back via VHF Hi to the car to be repeated out on VHF Low when it could all be handled directly on 800. IMHO it also reduces the points of failure as well as there are less items that have to work in tandem to make sure the communications take place. This is above and beyond making sure the in car repeaters handle the slave/master hand off in license check, etc type situations.

If I am not mistaken.

The following channels are being reused as NC State interoperability frequencies and are listed in the database.

154.680 Mhz Shp High Band
154.280 Mhz State Fire
154.265 Mhz Fire Mutual Aid
154.295 Mhz Fire Mutual Aid

Like I said theses are being redone for interoperability purposes.

I also think that SHP Highband 7 on Crowder's Mountain in Gaston County is still up and working.

Not many SHP cars still have the Highband radios installed anymore. Most all troopers are now issued XTS-5000 portables with the Viper System. Also I know that the H-4 Cleveland County SHP cars are being equipped with XTL-5000 800 Mhz Mobiles.

Hope this helps

I am near Lexington in Davidson County, NC.
I occasionally hear activity on this frequency.
Most of the traffic I hear is from SHP "Border Patrol" units in or near Metro Charlotte.
The "border patrol" is a nickname for SHP H Troop (Mecklenburg and Union counties), which borders on SC.

I actually was wanting to pickup the troopers mobile extenders for Troop G over by Asheville. I find it very useful in GA to set my scanner to the two mobile extender frequencies. It usually gives me more warning than my radar detector if the GSP are in the area. If the NCHP are going to a state wide system like VIPER I am pretty sure they won't have to use the mobile extenders anymore.

Well your extenders are still active in G1, G3, & G5, which consists of Haywood, Jackson, Transylvania, Henderson, Polk, Yancey, Mitchell, Avery, & Madison counties. That leaves G2, G4, & G6 on VIPER currently. I keep the 3 input frequencies to the vehicular repeater, the vehicular repeater, & the high band repeater in my scanner. The first 4 are helpful in sniffing out a nearby trooper, the repeater though is usually fixed and doesn't help to point out any local units.

Just my two cents.

My VRS was removed over two years ago and the standard mobile radio is going to be the XTL-2500, not the 5000. My district has been outfitted with XTS-5000 portables and all XTL-2500 mobiles. We still have low band but don't use it much.

Only VHF that I have seen lately was in a C-3 spare car. Just had VHF hi and low. No MDT nor anything else new. This was about 6 months ago, the Patrolman's Dodge was outta service. He liked the space in the CVPI, but missed the modern stuff. He had his XTS-5000, so he wasn't completely outta the loop.

Well to clear this up some.

You will not see many MDT Docking stations in many spare SHP cars.

This is due to the troopers assigned MDT and Modem have to match in order for it to work correctly.

About the only thing you will find in a spare car is the basic console.

In the console you will find the following:

1- Blue light control switch box with siren

1- Low Band mobile radio, and usually the display is so dim it is barely readable.

1- XTS-5000 mobile charger if there are spares.

1- Flashlight charger and usually it doesn't work or better yet it is not compatable with the new flashlights issued.

1- You may find a spare out there with an old Tait High Band radio in car repeater system thay may or may not work. Very doubtful you will find the portable that was assigned with it. If you had the portable very doubtful it would still work like it used to.

I know the troopers I work with raise sand when they are put into a spare car, because they can't work the road and have the tools like they do in their assigned vehicle.

Hope this helps

You could try it.

154.680 Mhz is supposed to be a Statewide channel.

The only difference is there are different transmit channels for the various repeaters across the state.

I know there is a repeater in Concord, Crowders Mountain, Buck Mountain, and Ellerbe

I too have heard the Troop H Dispatch traffic being simulcast on 154.680. I haven't heard it lately, but it has been in the last 6 months.
