Just swithched over to my "news bank" channel and my WBFF 450.5625 popped up and Jennifer (Gilbert?) was preparing to interview Gov. Erlich and the mics were "hot". Think it was a taping for later broadcast. Anyone ever check out the local "Chopper" feeds... the behind the scene stuff can be very intriguing :)

Yes...I have the News Chopper's on most days. Lots of good news feeds listed in the database.

I remember listening to the news feeds direct back during the Lewinsky/Clinton thing. They had Linda Tripp's house staked out and Lewinsky in downtown DC. Every move they made had news crews chasing them around...

To bring this topic back into the Maryland area :D

Here's a link for news feeds from the Baltimore area; probably could stand some updating...

Baltimore Media freqs

I always keep 123.475 handy, as well as one scanning in the range between 122.6 and 123.95 (for example, 122.7 is used on occasion as a chit chat freq between DC chopper pilots). The .475 freq is used once in a while the same way 122.7 is, as a chit chat between Baltimore area chopper pilots.

Thought not listening in the Maryland area, I've always tried to keep the news dispatch freqs (and traffic reporters) loaded into the scanner. Usually interesting info to be heard.

One thing to keep in mind on the 'hot' mics. The ECPA made 'listening' to those frequencies 'illegal'. But then Mark Twain was right in one of his comments about Congress "that grand old benevolant national asylum for the helpless".

What I have found in my area is that the TV crews are using their cell phones to get their dispatches and their direct links are microwave back to the station. Unless I am sitting right next to their mics, I don't hear anything (okay, right next to is a bit strong, but I have to be fairly close). About the only news related stuff I have heard in Hampton Roads is Metro Traffic.

I like to listen to the Fox channel 5 news broadcasts as you can hear all sorts of cool sturff. I also know of a frequency that is being used by WFRE for remote broadcasts (like broadcasting live from the mall). I can post that frequency later once I get home (currently I am awaiting the start of my last class for the term :D)

My only concern though is that the Radio Shack Police Call books say "...the interception of television and multimedia broadcasts with a scanner is illegal." So I am confused on the issue 0_o I don't see how it can be illegal since I used to listen to the broadcasts back in Highschool to gain insight into the behind the scenes work for my Television and Multimedia Production class over at CTC. Does anyone have any clarifications on the matter?

Fox 45 is famous for leaving their feed hot during prep for making their blurbs for their 10:00 broadcast...you'll hear them busting on each other, telling dirty jokes, etc.

And when the traffic guys around here have a spare few moments while waiting for the various stations they serve to pick them up, well, hopefully the young 'uns aren't listening to your scanner...

Aristotle73, yes, technically, listening to these feeds is illegal, but in the grand scheme of what the thugs (sorry, Feds) consider illegal and enforceable, IFB's and traffic comms are barely on their radar. IOW, nobody ever got busted or got any good dirt on anybody from listening to news feeds, but intercepting cell phones, pagers, cordless phones, etc. will get you busted if you're dim enough to share the information. The most fun I ever had listening to a news feed was when the cops finally cornered that Palzinski (sp?) fellow a couple of years ago and broke in and administered a really bad case of lead poisoning. The station I was watching had taken a break from live coverage, but you could hear the poppoppoppoppop over the feed. Yay.

Why exactly is listening to news feeds illegal?? That makes absolutely ZERO sense.

So should I post the WFRE remote broadcasting frequency or would I get in trouble?

Since I work for the station, you sir have the right to remain silent

You can post them, many other sites (including the FCC database) has them listed. It's open information, so no wrong doing there.
