The antenna connector on my WS1080 came out and needs to be resodered back in place. Has anyone sent their out of warranty units in for repairs? How was it?

I just received a TRX-1 in the mail on Monday (7-18-16). After setting it up, I turned in on and the keypad is locked up. The only key that works is the power key. I immediately contacted Whistler and they had me try a couple of different things with no success. So I have to mail it in for repair. They said that I should get an email in a couple of days for a UPS return ticket (tag). Then I send it to them... I guess I'll just have to wait and see how long this process is going to take.

Tim, its probably none of my business, but if you received your new, expensive Whistler, and it did not work out of the box, you should not send it in for repair; they should be sending you a new one. And, if they do not want to send a new one, I'm sure they have a return period. I would pack it up, send it back, and say I want a refund, then buy it somewhere else at a cheaper price.

Of course if you did not buy it from Whistler directly, return it to where you bought it from. I believe its to much money to send an expensive scanner in for repair that was damaged out of the box. Just MHO.

It takes a "couple of days" to get the shipping label?

Man. There's your hint. I'd call up the dealer you used. I bet he might be able to get you a new one almost as fast as Whislter can get you a return label.

It's sounding like there might be something funny going on with some of these scanners.

I guess you didn't read my post then. My scanner is well out of warranty, meaning over a year old.

Sure I did. Then I read the one after yours, which I thought deserved a response.

I've not sent anything in to Whistler, so I can't comment on such an experience. Frankly, I doubt many have. Please report back and let us know how it went for you.

It's not really. I bought a very expensive scanner that failed after just a year, due to either a horrible design or horrible craftsmanship. My only options are to either pay $120 for them to look at it, or just replace it outright and take the loss. :(

Change of plans. I was able to fix it (for now at least) myself. I broke the unit down and using a thin piece of solid core wire, I reconnected the antenna connector to the circuit board. It took a bit of work, and the RF shield has seen better days but it's working ok now. I hope it holds up, considering it was my first time soldering.

Jeff, great to hear. Good job tackling this yourself. I am very happy that you got it to work.

Whistler Handheld Antenna Repair Tips

See the picture below for information regarding the Whistler antenna. It appears that somewhere along the way, they change the manufacturing method for the antenna to board connection.

In case your scanner does the same, it's probably best to repair it with some wire so that there is more play in the connection. Also, try to lay it flat to get more weld if possible. Gluing or somehow securing the nut on the connector would probably be worthwhile as well.

Red below for the commentary about the old and new designs, as well as a picture. These posts were deleted from the other thread, so nothing to link to.

Thanks. If/when I have to bust mine open again, I'll try and get a few photos to show people what it looks like inside.
