Hello,

Do listening only.
Most anything < 30 MHz or so.

Have a 150 foot simple long wire ant. now outside house, a 9:1 Balun and a coax run into house.

Certainly works, but would like something a lot better, if possible.

I saw some writ ups on a Bonito mini whip I think it is called.
Bonito Boni-Whip active antenna

Just a short vertical "stub", Has its own small power supply too.

There might be a few different versions of; not sure.

Anyone using ?
Thoughts on?

Likely to be better than my present long wire ?

Any thoughts or comments would be most appreciated.

Regards,
Bob

They work but it takes effort to mount them properly - here's some links from our wiki

Most of those amplified whips just amplify RF noise within the home and they don't do much for the signal because there is no signal.

If you want to used something inside the home, consider one of the loop antennas.

MFJ-1886, LOOP, RECEIVING, .5 TO 30 MHz

If you read the links I gave, you would find that both are using outdoor installations. Indoor installations would be next to useless, as you stated. Keep in mind that the famous online SDR at the University of Twente uses such an installation.

Yes, loops are a better bet for MW and HF - and our wiki is just chock full of them, viz.

and yes, loops would be a better choice even indoors.

But with the kind of space the OP seems to have, there are many other kinds of wire antennas that would perform somewhat differently than the current 150 foot of wire he has. It depends greatly on his ability to do the construction work for them....Mike
