Hi,

Does anyone know if there is a place(s) to buy Uniden handheld scanners in or near the Little Rock/Central Arkansas area?

Thanks

It depends on what model/type uniden scanner you are looking for. Wal-mart or sears might have some low-tech uni-scanners thats alright if you only want to monitor conventional frequencies. Radioshack has a good selection on their brand but are a bit pricey on selling uniden brand. Also check around pawnshops. If you want to listen to AWIN you need a $500 digital scanner. Radioshack can help you get a uniden brand digital scanner for a extra 100 bucks more then their brand of digital scanners. All they do is go on the computer and buy it from someone else and charge you a 100 bucks more because its uniden brand.

Ok thanks. Was considering the BCD396T but since as a newbie, didn't want to spend that much at first. Thinking about the 246T or 330T to get started and then might upgrade later. You're right though, prices are definitely cheaper online. Thanks for the info.

well I just went through this when I bought my GRE brand here about 6 months ago.. I found out real quick that you're better off buying online..Reason: In state they throw in a butt load of federal/state/county/city taxes that end up adding about 40 dollars on... Get it online, It's better that way..

If you want to listen to anything other than LRPD, then you'll need a digital scanner.

I hear rumors that LRPD will go digital before long.

But the BR330T and 246 are good scanners.

Thanks for all the replies. I definitely would prefer the digital. I have a friend with the BCD396T and it is really nice, but the price tag is also a little more than I am really wanting to spend right now. I looked at the Pro-96 and it seems to get some good reviews, and is also less expensive. The main reason I was leaning toward the Uniden was because of (what seems to be) the big learning curve and my friend could help me get it set up. Also, I could use some of his local files. I would have no clue in setting up the GRE.

So, what is you guys' opinion on the BCD396T vs the Pro-96. I have read some of the reviews comparing them, but it doesn't hurt to get some local opinions. Other than size, I have read the Pro-96 has a little better sensitivity? Which might help me since I am just south of Little Rock in East End.

Thanks

BCD396T vs the Radioshacker. I never dealt with the Pro-96 so I really don't know what its performance is like. The main reason I got the 396 is because you get more items with it purchased new. 3 NiMH AA cells, a AD-1001 AC adapter, SMA rubber antenna, wrist strap, DB9 serial cable, belt clip and BNC/SMA adapter. After I got the 396 I liked it. I did have a problem with reception to the AWIN digital system. Since they used 800MHz frequencies I got a antenna for that band. It improved the signal signifantly.

If you get the BCD396T and are monitoring 800 band (AWIN, LRPD/FD, etc.) pick up a Radio Shack 800 MHz antenna. About $16.

Well worth it!

Same goes if you get the Pro-96. You can pick up a Pro-96 for a couple hundred bucks on ebay (and on the classifieds on here). They are good scanners. But be aware that they can't trunk track 700 MHz systems and there is at least 1 tower on AWIN that is 700 MHz. Who knows if they will put more in down the road?

The 700 MHZ Tower is Lake City In Northeast Arkansas And Yes, Here recently as in yesterday the 700 MHZ frequencies were VERY active as control channels..just a note

If you figure the cost/channel/frequency instead of the overall cost of the scanner, the high cost works out to pennies per channel/frequency. That's much better than the old crystal controlled scanners from years ago that worked out to $25-$50 per channel, depending on how many crystals were required.
